For those on a budget, flying out to Los Angeles may not be the best option. Trains are usually no cheaper. And with the way gas prices are and the wear a long trip puts on your car, you may, you just may want to consider taking Greyhound Buses. Round trip is about $150. Now, before you start labeling me as a lunatic madman, let me tell you that I've done this before. It was one of the worst/best experiences of my life. I went with a friend NOLA to L.A. and back. Round trip cost us $39 each. Cheapest 100 hour journey in the world. At about a 3800 mile roundtrip, that works out to approximately 1 cent per mile . That's Louisiana Purchase like numbers! It was a wild journey. The people I met were some of the craziest, most fascinating, and strangest people in America. Some stories include an 80 year old cowboy being left behind in some isolated grocery store near Fort Stockton, Texas, with the bus driver refusing to turn around. Pieces of the bus falling off into the desert, including several roof hatches. Watching two Mexicans without papers escorted off the bus by Border Patrol near Mexicali. Talking with a girl locked up for stabbing someone just on parole, and leaving to find a new life elsewhere. A man with chronic diahrea, stinking up and smearing the place 2.5 hours before San Antonio. The most beautiful sunsets over the Arizona desert. Few times have I felt physically so uncomfortable -- nearly 50 hours one way straight in a cramped spot has a way to do that to you. Yet I would not change it for the world. The memories made on that trip will be something that stick with me all my life, and I am sure I'll tell my grandkids. It was the best way I could ever imagine taking a real road trip, and seeing the American land and people. So if you're young, perhaps a student, and wanting to really explore this land and people, and want to do it on a budget, go Greyhound. I loved the experience so much that I now travel Greyhound all the time. These trips, however are always shorter. I'm getting too old to go cross country like that again. The memories will be more than worth it. Trust me.
I took a 3 hour Greyhound and had some indian stalker girl draw a picture of me with the lasagna throwup on my shirt from the guy next to me. it...was...awesome.
Welcome, to the Twilight Zone.... (cue in eery music) Dude, I'ld rather head west with the Donner party than with Greyhound.
I took a Greyhound from Ft Lee, Va to Hammond La. It took 22 hours, our bus was late to the transfer in so we had to spend an extra 5 hours in Greensburg bus station. And to make matters worse I GOT PINK EYE!
I wish we had a Train system like they do in the european union. The EURail is so simple and cheap and ALWAYS on time!
Lets rent 10 RV's, and load it with Kegs, and Boudin....we'll make it there in one piece...kinda like BAM's RV trip to Nawlins for Mardi Gras...
