Team prepared for spring scrimmage

Fans have their first opportunity to see the LSU football team in action under coach Les Miles Saturday. The Tigers will conclude spring practice with a scrimmage in Tiger Stadium at 11:30 a.m.

The team will go through a controlled scrimmage with the first and second teams getting about 55 live snaps each and will be situational from start to finish with mixed kicking situations. Miles said the scrimmage would give the staff a good look at the team.

“We will go one’s versus one’s and two’s versus two’s,” Miles said. “[This way] the best players go against the best players and the second best players go against the second best players, which allows a greater opportunity to compete.”

Miles said the scrimmage will be full contact with the exception of hitting the quarterbacks, who will wear green jerseys.

Allowing full contact during certain periods of practice would be beneficial to the team, Miles said.

I ate lunch today with Amp, E.J., Ali, Skyler, Big Herm, and Dominic Cooper. They are all excited about tomorrow and are ready to play, althought most of the players I've talked to would rather have the old format of the spring game.

I agree I like the old format better but what Miles says here does make sense.

“If you have the good fortune to divide the team equally and not mess it up, then the two quarterbacks who are competing for playing time would have equal opportunities,” Miles said. “With the nicks we have suffered on the offensive line, we really have one offensive line and the seconds there would not give one of the quarterbacks an equal opportunity to compete.”

Miles said several team leaders asked him to consider a spring game and said he enjoyed their input.

“The reality is that [a game] is not necessarily what is best for the teams’ development,” MIles said. “Currently, I have to be concerned first and foremost with that.”

Mr. In-the-know: How are Amp and Skyler's injuries?

Amp is 100% heathwise. He is still working to get back into the routine of playing at full speed. It has been 2 years since he played football at 100% so he is still getting back little things such as his footwork. Didn't ask Sky about his ankle, but he didn't appear to be limping or favoring it in anyway.
