The BS Sysyem, err BCS System

With the regular season winding down in week 12, the two teams poised to enter the BCS Champoinship pending a loss of either USC or Texas were Miami (#3 in AP and USA Today) and LSU (#4 in AP and USA Today). Miami loses to Ga Tech and LSU in the SEC Championship. The flaw I see is that if Miami does not reschedule and the SEC does not have a championship, the season ends with these two teams praying for a Texas or USC loss and can enter into the BCS Championship game. Well - they Miami and LSU each recieve a late season loss and drop entirely out of the "major" bowl picture. Some may say that is all we deserve. My problem is that if we went into a playoff, not a 4 team but rather an eight team field as many have mentioned on this board, the only two teams vying for that slot in week 12 would be entirely left out as they are now ranked 9th and 10th. Am I the only one with a problem here.

I don't have a problem with that. If you can't win when it counts, why do you deserve to get in? If you have a season with a few bumps in the road, that may not be enough to get a spot in the playoff. If you are lucky enough to make it anyway, you should be grateful.

I guess I should have elaborated on the W/L and quality of some of the #3 to #8 teams ie 9-2 Auburn ahead of 10-2 LSU and LSU ahead in the head to head bout.

Unfortunately, the current BCS methodology for matching teams up is significantly slanted towards generating as much revenue as possible.

Look at Notre Dame and Ohio State.

Notre Dame lost to the #74 ranked team.
Ohio State didn't beat anyone with a record better than 7-4.

Its all about the fans of these schools laying out some significant change in Arizona. Not to mention the ABC TV revenues.

I don't like the BCS system either although it beats the AP Poll. I wish we would have a playoff system.

My guess would be... if there was an 8 team playoff... you'd best win your conference or your conference championship game if you want to dance.

... so, no, I wouldn't have a problem with the 9th or 10th team... as they were probably runners-up to begin with.

If there is a playoff system, conferences will have to eliminate the bowl championships... that extra week in December will be needed either for a first round or a week off... the best way to do it would be a 16 team playoff... the "BCS" conferences only keep their automatic bid if they have a 12 team conference with a conference championship.. Also have to have some kind of ranking requirements, or you would have CUSA begging for an auto.. the Big East would lose their auto... So, say the Pac10 and Big10 both add a team or 2 to get to 12, then you have the SEC, ACC, Big12, Big10, and Pac 10 with automatic bids for BOTH teams in their conference championship game, provided both teams are ranked in the top 20... if the loser of the game is not ranked in the top 20, then the conference loses that automatic bid (big12 would have lost one this year)... the rest of the bids are at-large, leaving at least 4, maybe more for the top teams like Auburn who lose their division or teams like TCU from the Mid-Majors...

ACC (had v-tech won, the ACC would have lost an automatic bid)
    Florida St. 22
    Virginia Tech 10

    Big 12
    Texas 2
    Lost Bid

    Big Ten
    Penn St. 3
    Ohio St. 4

    Pac 10
    USC 1
    Oregon 5

    SEC
    Georgia 7
    LSU 12

At-large teams based on BCS rankings as non-championship teams

Notre Dame 6 (even though the ranking is bullsh*t)
    Miami 8
    Auburn 9
    West Virginia 11
    Alabama 13
    TCU 14
    Texas Tech 15

UCLA misses out at #16 because of FSU's win in the ACC championship.

Matchups are based on final BCS rankings.

First Round (home team is determined by ranking)
    1. USC vs. 16. FSU
    8. Miami vs. 9. Auburn
    5. Oregon vs. 12 LSU
    4. Ohio St. vs. 13. Alabama
    3. Penn St. vs. 14. TCU
    6. Notre Dame vs. 11. West Virginia
    7. Georgia 10. Virginia Tech
    2. Texas vs. 15 TT (sucks to get a repeat, but oh well)

Second Round (Just making picks. How do you determine homegames? I'm sticking with seeding. All teams who make this round are guarunteed one more game.)
    1. USC vs. 9. Auburn
    4. Ohio St. vs. 12. LSU
    3. Penn. St. vs. 11. West Virginia
    2. Texas vs. 10. Virginia Tech

Bowl Round (games take place at BCS Bowl sites on a rotating basis, so its luck of the draw.)
    1. USC vs. 12. LSU Sugar Bowl
    3. Penn St. vs. 2. Texas Orange Bowl
    Consolation games
Auburn vs. Ohio St. Rose Bowl
West Virginia vs. Virginia Tech. Fiesta Bowl

    Championship game
    1. USC vs. 2. Texas Nike National Championship game (just making up a sponsor here), hosted like the Super Bowl, cities bid for the game.

Great thought process. We should forward this to the NCAA, although I don't know if your two teams make it to the "Nike National Championship".

This playoff format, although slightly different, is what makes basketball, baseball, Div I AA football, etc all the more enjoyable because someone can come from the back of the pack and make noise. Under our present system with a few weeks left in the season there is not much room for surprises and hence not much enthusiam for many schools not in the race. In our present system, the #3 team can win out and still not make it to the NC game. A playoff system such as what you indicate would add NC excitment for 14 additional programs.

An 8-team playoff solves it all

It keeps alive the the winning need every weekend "barely any 2-loss teams would ever be put into it" and I would much rather a #9 team bitching then a #1 or #2 team

I agree with Marine tiger. 16 teams is too many teams in my opinion. It takes away from the importance of the regular season by letting in a large number of teams who have no business at all playing for the NC.

See my 8 team playoff thread...
