I'm fixing to go on vacation for three weeks, guys. I'm taking the laptop, so I'll be able to get online from time to time. But I won't be around to update the stadium photo for August 1, so here is the photo from today. All of the cast rake beams are in place.

But there appears to be a problem that may explain last weeks announcement that the northwest upper deck may not be ready in time. Check the third rake beam from the far end.

    Major defect.

A big spot in the concrete casting wasn't vibrated properly and left a big hole exposing the steel.

Red tell us non-engineers what that means from a safety/reliability standpoint.

I don't know, I'm not a civil engineer. But I have worked as a surveyor on construction sites many years ago. I have seen bad concrete pours that had to be replaced.

Some small defects in a casting can be patched, but major ones would require removal and repouring. I don't know if this one is a structural problem or not. It's a big area, but it may not make the beam unsound. Some engineer will chime in on this I hope.

I just hope this is not a result of trying to hurry this job too much.

Looks like it could be even worse on the other side of the beam. You can kinda see it on the webcam image. Could be my imagination though.

Better that they do it right no matter how long it takes. All we DON'T need is for the upper deck to collapse during our next earthquake game. That kind of distraction could be bad for the focus of the team.

I would believe that this is repaireable, even while construction is ongoing. This is what we specialize in(repairing concrete structures). Access is the largest concern, but once that is in place, it will take a lot of hands on demo to open the hole more and remove the loose aggregate until you reach sound matrix. Depending on the hole, it could be formed and poured or shot back in with shotcrete.

We repair damaged and corroded structures all over the country without taking them out of service.

Well hopefully a company like yours will be called upon to fix it. It would really suck for them to have to remove it and wait for another to be cast.
