Short interview. I'll try to highlight for you: Says there needs to be more of a human element involved. The public clearly wanted to see USC/LSU primarily due to the margin of defeat in the OU/KSU game. We "need" the human element as that would have resolved the issue 2 years ago as well as this year. Perhaps a "committee" of 6-12 people to make a final decision would be a "tweak". He said it (public reaction) would have been much worse if Carroll had not taken the high road (don't ask, he didn't elaborate). The public does not want computers telling them what to do. Would hate to implement a "conference champion" rule as there are alway exceptions, although he can't come up with a scenario where a non conf champ should be entitled to a spot in the NC game. Forget a playoff. Presidents won't let it happen. NO football during exams and/or spring semester. Says it's "not about the money". Basketball has playoffs why not FB? Apples and Oranges. Can't compare the 2. BB playoffs not during exams. Football more physically taxing on the student-athlete. All in all, not a bad interview except for the Pete Carroll "high road" remark. OU fans would not share my view. OU should not have been there according to Tranghese.
Thanks for the wrap up. I think the committee idea would lead to more problems. I still have a probelm with saying the human elements should count more than they already do. I'll never agree with that until the human voters prove that they can be unbiased (like that will ever happen).
Now there's a pantsload if ever I've heard one. How does Mr. Tranghese explain the fact that 1AA has a playoff system that seems to work just fine?
I was hoping Rome would ask that question. The main point Tranghese was making (I think he would like a playoff) was that the Presidents are adamantly against it and he doesn't see that stance changing anytime soon.
Do you think he was talking about a full blown playoff, or do you think that they wouldn't approve even one extra game to have a 4 team playoff?
"Playoff" is a 4 letter word to the Presidents. They are using the "academics" excuse but it's the money. It's always the money.
I like the extra game scenerio, "ONLY" if it came down to another situation that has happened this year LSU, USC and OU. If the NC is a clear choice, then, we won't need it. If the NC isn't clear, then, we should have another game to settle the matter. Though I wish that we can play USC next week in a neutral spot. I think that Texas stadium would be perfect. Next year won't matter because we wouldn't have the same people playing.
