i guess it was true afterall. UK's Archer is latest target for 'Fins coordinator spot By Harvey Fialkov and Alex Marvez Staff writers Posted February 21 2005 Dolphins coach Nick Saban has reached back to his roots at Louisiana State University for his latest candidate to fill the vacant defensive coordinator spot. After reported rejections from Todd Grantham, Eric Mangini and Kevin Steele, the Dolphins have turned their attention to University of Kentucky defensive coordinator Mike Archer. Tony Neely, Kentucky sports information director for football, confirmed Sunday night that Archer interviewed with the Dolphins last week, but Archer told Neely he hasn't made any decisions yet. Archer didn't wish to comment Sunday. Like Saban, Archer coached the Tigers (1987-90), leading them to a 27-18-1 record, two bowl games and the Southeastern Conference championship in 1988. Archer, a former University of Miami punter and safety, was the Hurricanes' defensive backs coach from 1976-83 and part of the '83 national championship team. http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/sfl-dolphins21feb21,0,4840474.story?coll=sfla-sports-front
just because he wasn't overly successful as LSU's HC doesn't lessen him as a DC. The fact he comes from the Kentucky program gives him an unfair label.
Archer did win an SEC title at LSU as Head coach. In modern memory only Saban and Bill Arnsparger has done that. Not too bad. He was too young to be head coach when he became HC at LSU. How did he land up at Kentucky as DC anyway.
Saban is going to be runing the defense anyways, he just needs a puppet. Archer is a perfect fit for Miami.
Don’t forget, Archer was a position coach for the Steelers before he came back to Lexington with success. He coached linebackers; in fact every year with the Steelers, he had All-Pro players under him. Came back to Lexington to be with his daughter and son (who attend UK). Archers is a great coach and we hate to have him leave. He would be foolish not to take this gig in Miami. By the way, the thread that was started was based on a report on Channel 27 in Lexington. Dave Baker (sports-JP sideline reporter for football and calls basketball games broke the story last week. Things are bad with Brooks; he has lost 5 coaches since the Tennessee game. Rumblings are going around Lexington about his shaky future. I promise you Barnhardt is looking to pull the trigger. Only reason he did not was to have a somewhat stable program. He felt making a change would only disrupt the flow from the probation. Muschamp looking for a job, we may have an opening; could Barnhardt bring him in on the condition he will be next in line after Brooks falls on his face? Stranger things have happen.
brooks may be the worst coach in the league yet kept his job based on his name alone. I want Muschamp here but I think he would be a excellent hire for a school like Kentucky. If he fails, so what...basketball season will soon be there. If he succeeds then LSU can offer him more money to return then you can have Jimbo for a year. And the cycle continues.
Tirk, My friend, I agree! I think Muschamp would be perfect here. Question is would he come here knowing how bad Brooks is on shaky ground. By the way, Brooks was not nor hired on his name, he was the last resort and a panic hire. It is true that Parcells did agree in principle to coach at UK (had assistants I line), but ‘Old Jerry Jones came a calling. Then Barnhardt went after Norm Chow, well Norm agreed in principle, but when he got back to So-Cal, his wife nixed the deal (daughter was sick and did not want to be so far away). Recruiting signing period was within weeks, Barnhardt went to an old buddy that he knew would take the job at a cheap price. This is where we lie today. We are looking for a winner in football. We do fill the stadium (top 20 in attendance). We are not bandwagon fans (i.e., LSU Basketball). It will have the support, the facilities, now all we need is a winner of a coach. Muschamp as DC, fire Brooks after a dismal season, and he walks in. What do you think?
first off, you're not allowed to post here calling LSU fans bandwagon in any respect. You must delete that comment whether true or not. Parcells considered UK about as much as Saban was really considering turning down the fins joba and staying here. :hihi: :hihi: the fact that your school was in the top 25 in attendance the last 3 years was shocking to me when i read it on CFN awhile back. I must admit that does say a lot about your fans. Well, he may not have been hired simply because of his name yet I do believe he wasn't an old NFL HC then there's no way you guys hire him and if not for his past, anyone else woulda been run out of there. Why wasnt archer named HC? I figured that was their best move then and now. i dont think muschamp goes there til Brooks is gone.
