I know it's all about money but the SEC has such a brutal schedule every year that the best record should automatically go to a BCS bowl. I look at OSU this year and they had a weak schedule and they don't play in a bowl game. Away with the SECCG.
As a fan I love it. Nothing like getting to go to Atlanta in December to watch the Tigers play. But I agree that it is brutal. I say make the other conferences man up and play a championship game. Eventually I think they will because the 10 team conferences will expand at some point, and I think it us required to have a championship game with 12 teams.
It's a double-edged sword for team in MNC contention. It can give a late push for a team like LSU in '03 by giving the team one last quality opponent to impress voters and help the computer ratings. It also lets teams play on the last weekend of the year and give one last impression to voters over idle teams. Downside is lose and the team is done for its MNC and BCS hopes.
Another thing....if you make a BCS/New Years Day bowl game, with the SECCG in place, you dont have as much of a layoff between the big game and your last regular season game. Ask tOSU about that 50+ day lay off they had last year.
West teams only play 2 teams from the East & vice versa, that is not enough to determine a true conference champion. The only way to have a true conference champion in a 12 team conference is to have a championship game.
I like having the game...just think it's ridiculous that it's a home game for one of the teams in the conference. Not whining...but this seems unfair.:LSU231:
Instead of doing away with the SECCG, better yet, make ALL conferences HAVE conference title games! I have MUCH more respect for teams that have to battle against another top-level program in their conference. Take Kansas. They didn't have to play traditional powers OU or Texas in the regular season and if NOT for the Big XII title game, they would cake walk through their conference schedule and it wouldn't be an indication as to how good of a team they DO have. I LOVE conference title games. I just think it's stupid that 10-team conferences don't have one. IMO, every conference with an even-number of teams SHOULD be broken up into 2 divisions. And as for the Big Ten...they simply need to add another program to make them a 12-team league. Obviously, everyone wants to see Notre Dame in there, but the Irish would NEVER surrender their independant status because frankly, they would be stupid to share the millions of dollars they make (reguardless of how bad they are) with 11 other programs. If Cincinnatti can put together more seasons like they are having now, they might be someone to look at...
