I think it was in 02 that our defense lost its free safety because of some reason that very few of us heard about. We put in Jack Hunt to replace him I think but there was a drop off in athelticism at the time (Jack turned out to be a very good player the next year). Everybody made a big deal about it because he was our qb of the defense, he essentially quit the team. Know who I'm talking about, was it Damian James?
'twas damian. little nickie kicked him off the team after a brief 3 day absence and then an in-house meeting. enter jack hunt and some kid named randall gay corners were cw and hookfin i think.
Damien James. As I recall, DJ quit or was kicked off after we destroyed South Carolina in Marcus Randall's first start as QB. (Matt Mauck was injured against Florida the previous week.) That same week, Terri Saban's father passed away. This kept Coach Saban out of town or otherwise occupied that week. The next week LSU went to Auburn (we were favored, I think) and got trounced 31-7. Few people know what really happened that strange week. After whipping S. Carolina, LSU was #8 and looking at a BCS berth. the loss of Mauck and James coupled with our D-line being slowed by nagging injuries caused as to fall out of the Top 25. we were still fortunate to be offered the Cotton Bowl where we were whipped by Texas. DJ's replacemant, Jack Hunt, was blamed for missing the coverage on the last second pass that won the Arkansas game for the Razorbacks and kept us from going to the SECCG.
I heard all kind of crazy rumors about that guy, mostly drug oriented. Hadnt heard anything about it in a while though. Talk about a kid flushing his career, it had to have been on him because the team invited him back under certain conditions if i remember correctly.
James played for the Toronto Argonauts (cfl) last season. I don't see him on their roster this year though.
