Why are so many schools claiming B.S. football "titles"?

In the last few years it seems that some schools around the country are willing to claim virtually any title in football whether or not it is actually earned or deserved.

USC seems to be at the top of the heap in this regard but there are others.

1-USC claims the NC from 2003 even though there is a sytem which everyone agreed to in advance which crowns the true National Champion and USC didn't qualify to compete for the title.

2-This past season, USC actually went back 40-50 years to claim a NC which was always regarded as a National Title won by Texas A & M. USC revised their record books to claim this NC because some very obscure poll had USC listed as the National Champion. USC claimed this title even though the AP and UPI and every other reputable poll recognized A&M as National Champions.

3-Auburn has now claimed a National Championship for 2004 even though they did not qualify to compete in the BCS Championship game. Auburn is now apparently National Champions by simply proclaiming themselves as such. I suppose Utah will follow as they were undefeated last season and deserve the MNC every bit as much as Auburn.

4-Ole Miss actually hung a banner at their stadium proclaiming themselves as
SEC-West Champions in 2003. While this "championship" may technicly be correct as Ole Miss tied LSU for the overall SEC West standings with a 7-1
record in 2003, it is ignoring the tie-breaker rules of the SEC which says head to head results decide who actually goes to play in the SEC Championship Game which is what the season is all about and the very reason there are SEC Divisions in the 1st place. What is really lame about Ole Miss claiming this "title" is that LSU won the tie-breaker by beating Ole Miss on the very field where Ole Miss hung their banner. Then there is the fact that LSU also won the SEC Title as well as the true National Title in 2003 as well.

1-Actual champion=LSU (LSU won the only NC game played that season).

    2-Actual Champion=Texas A & M. (won by the standards of that year).

3-Actual Champion=USC (USC won the only NC game played that season).

    4-Actual Champion=LSU (determined by Tie-breaker).

There just seems to be more and more of this B.S. in the past couple of years which surrounds teams wanting to be something they in reality are not.
It is truly lame and with the Auburn situation has reached ridiculous proportions.

I can understand Ole Miss claining SEC West Co-Champs...

We just did that in basketball, Bama won the tie-breaker, but we are claiming it as well...

Quite simply, because there is no playoff system.

No, they aren't. Nobody else in the civilized world recognizes anybody other than USC as last year's champs. The Alabama Poly types are simply delusional.

I, for one Auburn fan, do not recognize last year's SEC Champs as National Champs. Unfortunately, USC won the only game that matters. I would have liked to get a shot at them and hoped that they were not as "on" as they were against Oklahoma. Unfortunately, we will never know who would have won that game. I know most of you would argue that USC would have handed us our asses on a platter, but how many of you would have predicted the ass kicking that they handed Oklahoma.

With all that being said, I am content with the SEC Championship and the 13-0 record.

By the way, I am new to the forums (no joke, huh, with the VERY low post count), but I am not here to stir up a bunch of crap. I just like seeing what other teams and fans are saying about the SEC as a whole. It gets boring if everyone has the same view all the time. I liek to engage in debates from time to time and I will defend my Tigers if I feel like they are getting a raw deal, but I try to pick and choose my battles, knowing that I am a visitor on this board.

    War Eagle.

Welcome 1990! I suspect these losers like to claim things they didn't earn because in today's "mamby pamby everybody's a winner in some way" Oprah/Dr. Phil kind of way, they need some validation.

It's BS, plain and simple. And who should really be proud of "winning" half a conference? That's just assinine.

    ^^ Frame it!

Great first post, especially for an Auburn (spelling it right just for you) fan. A model citizen for the rest of your fellow Auburn supporters. Welcome to the forum.

I know this one isn't in line with the others mentioned here, but I say Alabama in 1973 should be on the "BS Champs" list.

Yes, the UPI recognized Bama as the champs but it took the embarassing turn of events of declaring Alabama champion *PRIOR TO* it's bowl game against Notre Dame, *LOSING* said game to Notre Dame and still being #1 to get the UPI out of the stone age practice of naming a champ before the bowls.

Technically, 'Bama "won" the title as per UPI's rules at the time, but that doesn't change the fact that it's simply ridiculous and embarassing for Alabama to claim that "title", something they've done for over 30 years now.
