Why LSU's mascot is a Tiger

I came across this today looking for something else and wasn't aware of the origin or our mascot. I guess I'm like the teenage parent.....always the last to find out. :hihi:

I was thinking about this the other day. Is Tiger the most common mascot in sports? Just off the top of my head: Princeton, Memphis, LSU, Clemson, Auburn, Detroit (MLB), Missouri.

Other common ones would have to be: Eagles, Wildcats, Bears.

 

And I thought thats where the term chinese bandits came from?
