According to SI.com's Stuart Mandel, the top five worst coaches at present are:

    1. Chan Gailey (GT)
    2. Rich Brooks (Ky.)
    3. Gary Pinkel (Missouri)
    4. Bobby Wallace (Temple)
    5. Joe Paterno (PSU)------bet this one brings rain in Happy Valley

would agree on Pinkel at Mizzou. That guy hasnt done anything since he's been there except lose the Indy bowl. They have a hesiman caliber qb and they cant win 7 games.

Sometimes a school has to make a hard decision. LSU had to let Mac go, even though he was a legend.

Penn State deserves the losses if they can't see the need to retire Joe Paterno.

Sounds a little like Paul Wiggin at Stanford back in the late 70s-early 80s.
John Elway's one and only shot at a bowl game was ruined when Cal ran back that fluke kickoff into the Stanford band.

Funny that the two worst coaches in college were both head coaches in the NFL.

paterno isnt one of the worst coaches... I mean it's not like they're making bad playcalls... his problem lies with his assistants. word of mouth is that his son isnt a very good coach. it's hard to think that you're just "not a good coach any more" where does the knowledge go...? the guy's not senile or anything...

and good for him if he wants to keep coaching... Penn state loves him, I bet if you ask anyone in happy valley they'll tell you the same thing... paterno's not the problem. even if he is... they wont admit it... he's earned the right to do whatever he wants there.

There is a Joe Paterno Nick Saban connnection. Back in the mid-90s maybe 95 or late 94, Fran Ganter the then offensive coordinator and 2nd in command at Penn State was offered the Michigan State after Saban's mentor Geo. Perles--the designer of the Steel Curtain for the Steelers was fired. Ganter turned down the job and the second choice--Nick Saban took the job.

Ganter supposedly was to be the successor to Joe, but I think he was fired/retired from coaching a couple of years ago. Supposedly Ganter turned down MSU because there was talk that he was going to be the successor.

They'll admit it and fire him if he has the same record this year as last, and refuses to step down.
