Anyone here read the Advocate online? I usually read the sports (at least the stuff about LSU football) every day, but I haven't been able to pull it up for several days. I'm wondering if there is something wrong with their site or if it's just my computer, for some reason. Are y'all having the same problem?

    Thanks.

Saban hoping two-quarterback system helps Tigers

Marcus Randall completed 5 of 7 passes for 59 yards and one touchdown against Arkansas State last Saturday.
Head coach Nick Saban said Monday the Tigers need to make the combination of Marcus Randall and JaMarcus Russell work for LSU instead of letting it be a quarterback controversy.
"My view of the quarterback situation now is that both quarterbacks can be weapons for our team," Saban said, "and I think the best advantage for our team is to use both quarterbacks in that regard, and that's really all I really have to say about that."

That was all he had to say about that until his next sentence.

"Both guys have ability to do certain things, and we're going to try to plan it so both guys have an opportunity to do that," Saban said during his weekly news luncheon.

Saban answered some questions on the quarterbacks. He dodged others.

Saban didn't say when he told Randall and Russell who would be LSU's starter before a 53-3 victory Saturday against Arkansas State, nor when he'll tell them who will start the 2:30 p.m. game Saturday at Auburn.

"I don't know when I'll do it," Saban said. "We don't talk about the quarterbacks, because you guys had your polls and all that, and I've got to get that information."

Saban told the news media Wednesday he would "never" again discuss the quarterbacks with reporters. After saying he didn't want players' mothers calling him to complain about public-opinion polls concerning their sons' playing time, Saban said he was joking.

Some reporters thought Saban meant he was joking when he said he would no longer talk about the quarterbacks, mostly because he's talked about them more than once since Wednesday.

    He clarified his stance Monday.

"I talk about them," Saban said, "but you can't ask about them. You do your polls, and I'll look at the result of your polls and I'll get the information I need from that."

Clearly, Saban was joking about that.

He later considered whether college defenses have trouble adjusting to a team with two quarterbacks.

"Both of our guys have abilities and can be weapons for our team," he said. "Rather than creating a controversy with them, I think we should use them both as such until one of them clearly starts to do extremely well, and we feel is ready to kind of be that guy on our team.

"I've talked to a lot of guys on the team about it. It doesn't seem to have a big effect on them which guy's playing quarterback. I think a lot of them respect Marcus, and I think a lot of them have a lot of deference toward JaMarcus' ability and how he may continue to develop."

He said he'll use each quarterback's strengths as much as possible.

Will Saban go by feel on when to use each player, or will he have a plan?

"We'll have a plan," he said. "I don't know what it is yet. We're not talking about it anyway.

"I'll call (Auburn coach Tommy) Tuberville and tell him as soon as we get out of here."

Randall said he and Russell met Saturday morning with Saban, who told them Randall would start against Arkansas State and Russell would play in relief. They played the same number of offensive series.

There's no significant advantage in knowing earlier in the week who will start, Randall said.

"It doesn't really matter, because you still have to go out and practice hard -- starter, no starter," he said. "He could tell us early in the week or he could tell us late in the week. It still wouldn't matter because you still have to go out and prepare like you're going to be the starter anyway."

Russell said he's comfortable starting or coming off the bench.

"In high school, I started my whole career," he said. "I know what it's like to start. Now I know what it's like to come off the bench.

"I guess whatever coach says ..."

Russell wouldn't identify any drawbacks to a two-quarterback system.

"Like I say all the time, we're on the same team, contributing to the same team," he said. "By him being out there, it's great for me to pay attention and realize what's going on out there, getting a feel for it by being on the sideline with Marcus out there."
