Anyone else think that XC should be moved to the defensive backfield? We know he can't catch. With his speed he could be a great asset at cornerback. Too tall maybe?
I don't think he's physical enough. And speed is one thing, quickness is another. Skyler had quickness and speed. So far Carter's only shown me speed.
On being physical, you're right. But I don't remember Deon Sanders being a very physical cornerback. It does seem like Xavier doesn't have the "shake and bake" moves like other speedy players. Although, I do remember watching his high school highlight videos, and it did seem like he had that quickness at that level.
He's still young. Give him time. Bennie Brazell didn't blossom until he was a senior. One can learn how to run patterns and catch, but you either have speed or you don't. He has the natural speed, thank heavens, and has time to develop his receiving skills since we are deep at WR.
How do we know that he can't catch? I remember him dropping a for sure td against ASU, but don't recall any other ones(may have had a couple). For whatever reason, he appeared to have gotten in the doghouse. Miles stated that the reason Addai was back with Skyler on kickoff returns was because he needed someone back there who was willing(and able) to block. A very good wr only gets his hands on the ball about 10-12% of the total plays. You'd better be willing to block and be a good decoy the other 90% of the time. As far as him playing db. He doesn't have the hips to play corner and isn't physical enough to play safety. Hopefully he'll work his but off this spring & summer so he can make significant contributions to the offense next year.
I agree with marc...anyone remember Chris Cummings? That dude was one of the fastest guys in the country but couldn't cover WRs including Travis McGriff of Florida.
I went to hear Nick Saban speak one time I remember Nick saying Xavier had the potential to be a great college corner. He said that this is where Xavier could make his money in the NFL. But since it was up to the X Man on where he wanted to play, he stayed at WR. I got the impression Saban really wanted to move him there as a Freshman. Guess we'll never know how good he could have been. I still think he can be a great WR.
