Overall I thought Mainieri was a good HC. Evident by leading LSU to another national title. He had a great relationship with Skip and that says a lot. The SC athletic director is Ray Tanner, the former HC who led the Cocks to 2 national titles, so he also nows a little about baseball. The fact that LSU struggled during Mainieri’s last few years was largely related to his health issues. That said, would I trade Johnson for him? NO!
Wasnt aware of his health issues which I guess are resolved if hes taking on a new HC gig, albeit lower expectations maybe. I always just attributed it to playing not to lose after winning it all. AKA, LesMiles disease...
Mainieri went thru a few neck surgeries. The neck pain was so bad the last few years that he said he could no longer demonstrate individual hitting and fielding adjustments he thought some of the players needed, so he left it all to the assistant coaches. I read an article where he recently stated that the neck pain is gone and he had resumed activities like golfing.
not anywhere remotely close to the same. So Carolina is still a decent program, and not very far removed from being in the upper tier of the sport. They can and have competed at the highest levels. Even today, they are in a spot most of the country would envy. It’s just not good enough in the SEC. Especially for a school with 2 Natties this century. Kansas in football is the bottom of the barrel and always has been. They have hired several big name guys that were the next “big thing”. And yet they still remained Kansas.
they may have. or Leipold my be just like Mangino was. a quick blip on the radar and back to stacking up 3-win seasons. there is a reason they are 100+ games below .500 all time.
