Pretty big news: Richard Murphy will wear coveted No. 18 in 2010 Figured it deserved it's own thread being how big of a deal it is. LSU junior tailback Richard Murphy...will wear the Tigers coveted No. 18 jersey in 2010, head coach Les Miles confirmed today. Senior tight end Richard Dickson awarded the jersey to Murphy before the team headed to Orlando for the Capital One Bowl game against Penn State. Dickson, in turn, received the jersey from tailback Jacob Hester at the end of the 2007 season prior to the BCS national championship game against Ohio State. As the Hester-to-Dickson-to-Murphy chain makes clear, the relatively new tradition surrounding the number '18' is built on a player's character as much as his accomplishments. Hester, a pit bull running back who, despite his small size, topped 1,000 yards his senior year and now plays on Sundays for the San Diego Chargers, while the similarly undersized Dickson was a three year starter who this season became LSU's all time leading receiver as a tight end. Murphy, who like Hester and Dickson is a very popular player, has endured more than his share of hardship. He lost both is parents to cancer before even enrolling at LSU as a freshman and now lost his junior season to the knee injury. Character, drive, talent, overachievers...that makes the #18 jersey special! I love that the player having worn the jersey passes it on. Good stuff.
