true but theres no margin for error or slippage in recruiting nowadays or you fall so far behind you cannot catch up for a good while. this dude is whack. this crazy bastard is kinda funny though. (clair is down there chomping at the bit i see yet is bound and gagged :hihi: :hihi: )
sometimes looks are deceiving. in Van's case they are not. looks like he celebrated a bit too much at lunch.
lets just say i was picturing a taller lou holtz dude hacking up, chain smoking bumpkin. guess not. i think we have the basketball version of Coach O. yaw yaw bakketbawww!
Coach V is a great coach but I really wished we could of hired someone a little younger who's gonna still be alive after 3 years.
You have got to be kidding? I've been traveling for almost a month so was way out of the loop and didnt read the boards much. Was there no list of candidates and interviews? This is a strange hire.
Lets let him get in the door before we assume he is weary old man. I thjink he is going to surprise many of us. He had a nice little break to get rested and who knows he could go 8-10 years. No one can argue with his abilities as a coach because his resume speaks for itself. We are going to see some great coaching and team chemistry that the women were lacking much of the season.
Well, what we expected happened. Van Chancellor is our man. http://www.lsusports.net/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=5200&ATCLID=860191 I guess there's a couple of reactions to this hire. First, you're probably going to be biased on this hire on whether you feel experience and track record is needed vs. young recruiter/up and coming coach. Second, I find it interesting that "11 candidates" started on this list, it was narrowed down to 3, and then Van was chosen. Southard made it sound like there were a lot of candidates in the search, but wouldn't you want to know who was in the final 3? Third, no mention of salary (not that they would in this press release, but again, I'd be curious). In light of the fact that SEVERAL big name women's coaching spots were open, this was a tough year to be talking to folks. But, I have my theories. First, LSU was paying Pokey something like $400k per. They may have gone slightly higher for Van, but I don't think they went anywhere near what Texas offered Coach G ($1M), what Baylor is paying Coach M ($800k+), etc.--so, I'll bet he was viewed as a "value" hire--as LSU is probably viewing it's basketball coach strategy. Second, if you look at Van as a short term solution (and let's face it, he's got talent, a window, and we desparately want a championship), then it makes sense to roll the dice on the chance to get a Hall of Famer, right? I mean it doesn't hurt for us to get a Hall of Famer, and the guy can legitimately coach. He's proven (and I generally think that proven is good, and NBA experience is great). True, he may only be here 3-7 years. BUT, he's a NC coach. We wouldn't have gotten that had we gone on the current "top-tier" women's coaching market. Does he bring a lot of credibility? Yes. Is he a good coach? Yes. Will he relate to players and recruit? Well, that's the question (and I will want to see what new recruiting blood he brings to the staff), but if he retains most of the staff and perhaps adds a protege close to him, this may not be all that bad. All in all, a good hire for the year and the situation, not the perfect hire, IMO. But, if we win a NC or get even get into the Finals, or win a few more SEC outright titles in the next few years, I guess it's worth it.
