This is pretty fucking terrible. One could argue that it would be criminal if the President didn't get our POW back as the President is Constitutionally obliged to protect our soldiers and look after their interests.
It is unlikely that the 5 people released will ever amount to anything. They have never been charged with terrorist activities against American civilians or non-military targets according to court documents. Their crimes occurred before the arrival of US troops, who snatched them up for the purposes of gathering intelligence. Ten years later I doubt they know anything that can be of use, so it's time to let them go anyway. That sounds more like soldiers than terrorists and it's a centuries-old practice to swap soldiers for soldiers.
Let me ask you this: If the US doesn't release them, what should they do with them?
There are benefits that I have not seen discussed here. For example, now that we have our POW back we can attack and destroy the Haqquani Network at will. That's something that we couldn't do while they were holding our soldier. That alone makes this trade worth it. I don't give a shit about these 5 Taliban guys. I'm just glad we didn't give the Afghan Taliban money like other countries do. Also, we now have five fewer people in Gitmo. That brings us closer to shutting down what is a black-eye for America.
Also, the Taliban is technically
not a terrorist group according to our State Department. We have been engaged with them politically and realize that they must be involved in the rebuilding and governing of Afghanistan if we are to avoid another collapse like Iraq.
