Just a thought....it seems to me the more and more loaded we get on offense, the better the chances for Matt Flynn to win the starting QB job. I'm assuming either he or Russell will beat out Randall. It seems to me that the greater the talent around the quarterback, the less need there is for a playmaker type like Russell. The emphasis is on a quarterback who executes the offense, minimizes mistakes, and gets the ball in the hands of the playmakers. Early returns indicate Flynn is ahead of Russell in that respect.
I wouldn't buy too much into that Flynn knows the offense better than Russell.......I know that was said, but it was said at the BEGINNING of last season....I am willing to bet that they are pretty much on the same level now that they have both been through a year of football.....who ever ends up starting will be the QB that gives LSU the best chances to win. I for one think Randall will be the starter.....everyone talks about our inexperience at QB...but Randall has started 7 games against TOUGH competition....Mauck had only started 6 games (most against cupcakes) before last season and look what happened. And before I get the "Randall sucks responses" remember that in the 1st 6 games of 2002 Mauck made many mistakes (except Florida game), but it was against poor competiton....Randall made the same mistakes that all first time starters do but it was against SEC competion and they will capitalize on your mistakes unlike the Citidels and ULL's....all I'm saying is don't count out Randall, he could be the Mauck of 2004.
Or the Rohan of 2001. Who ever is the QB, they have the ideal situation: a great defense, a great running game, and a coaching staff that thrives on making adjustments as the season progresses. I can honestly say we should beat everyone on our schedule.
the bottom line is this this season Russel was ahead of Flynn. if Randal or Mauck would have gotten hurt...Russel would have come in and Flynn would have continued to wear the "last string" head set and clip board. Russel is still ahead of Flynn and is progressing past him aswell.
Russell sucks!! Sorry, geauxscott, I just couldn't resist! In all honesty, I agree that we could maybe be better off with an experienced QB at the helm, but something tells me the Randall won't be able to beat out the talent of Russell. While I haven't seen Russell play, I have seen him practice, and he was very crisp and sharp, while Randall didn't show much promise.
Eleven, you're the first person I've read not saying the "Flynn is ahead of Russell" line. Do you have some info we're not hearing?
He is refering to a quote by Saban or some other coach that was said at the beginning of last season.....it was something like "Flynn has picked up the system and learned the plays quicker, therefore putting him ahead of Russell at the time".....but that was long ago, and it probably isn't true now that they have both been through an entire football season
I believe Randall will do everything he can to win the job ... he has alot to prove after his disappointing (I'm being nice) end to the 2002 season. I'm not saying he will, but with Fisher coaching him, I won't say it's impossible! Fisher has turned some average QBs into really good ones!
not really...ive talked to a position coach who has told me that, but...most of that is public knowledge. all the position coach was doing...was basically repeating what Saban had said over the season. he certainly didnt give any inside information...just repeated what Saban has said publically. said that Russel was the #3 QB this season. he said that if he was needed to play as a freshman....that they were very confident that Russel could do a good job. said that not many QBs can play in the SEC as a freshman, but Russel could have done it. said that if either Mauck or Randal had gotten injured this season...then Russel would be getting in and playing. and nothing has changed since then and none of that is really "inside" information...since Saban has come out and said that very same thing a couple of times. for some reason rumors have been started about Russel....some saying he's a thug, some saying he was pouting from not getting to play, and then the rumors that he cant pick up the offense. some even say he cant read coverages... 1) he's not a thug 2) if you watch replays of the games...he was always hootin' and hollerin'....waving a towel...and after the SECCG...he was out running around on the field waving one of the huge LSU flags. 3) he is picking up the offense.....of course he's going to struggle with it some...he's a freshman. 4) he did have to adjust to the speed of the game....but so did Flynn and so has every single player who has played college football......and he also was the best at reading coverages at the elite 11 QB camp...not bad none of this is meant to doubt Matt Flynn at all. i wouldnt be surprised or disapointed if he won the job. i just speak up because i see a lot of untrue rumors about Jamarcus Russel...and i dont think its fair to him. this is def. not a "Flynn sucks" post....its just at this time...Jamarcus Russel is ahead of Matt Flynn....if they were to play a game today (we'll say that Randal couldnt be here that day..just to avoid that argument)....then Russel would start. all of this could change over the offseason though.....
