This RP saga and all the enjoyment he seems to get out of it got me thinking.... What were the all-time most overblown recruiting battles ? I don't mean the players talent, I mean the recruiting drama. The guys who waited till the last minute to declare, and loved every moment of it. I remember the recruitment of Tyrone Vaughn in the early 80's was ridiculous. Gregg Dubroc's recruitment was kind of a crazy circus. Harvey Williams - had everyone thinking he was going to A&M, then pulled out the LSU hat (poetic justice ?) Torran Williams was the second coming by the time he got to BR. Did'nt Damien James wait till signing day to decide ? I know i'm missing the best ones..... I thought tonight may be a good time to remember those sagas, and not get too hyped up over the overblown last-minute signees. That said, we HAVE to get RP, Bennett, Demps, or else......(just kidding)
If RP doesn't sign with LSU... won't be that bad... through the grape vine, there are a ton of good QBs coming out of highschool from Texas and La next year
The biggest recruitting hypes I have seen since 1976 in following LSU football... 1978-9 Johnny Hector signed with Texas A&M 1980 Bubby Bister Alabama 1981 Greg Dubroc not really super big like most on the list. 1982 Garry James 1983 Stan Humphries 1986 Harvey Williams 1987 Torun Robinson 1988 Tyronne Malone, funny the two biggest bust were signed back to back years.TM was rated the #5 recruit in the nation that year. 1992 Robert Toomer 1994 Josh Booty #1 qb out of high school that year, over Peyton. 1995 Kevin Faulk 1997 Rohan Davey was #3 qb 1999 Trev Faulk 2001 M. Spears, M. Hill, Big Ben and M. Clayton this class may never be equaled. 2003 J. Russell, stock kept going up as he had not committed, Bama, Auburn, Tenn, FSU all wanted him. 2005 RP, had he not committed early to Texas would be the number 1 recruit in the nation.
I can't remember the guys name, I'm getting way too old. But he was a an all world LB prospect and the battle was between LSU and aTm. His father was a College All American and he was big strong and fast. I bel;ieve it was the son of John David Crow but I am not sure.
