An LSU joke

    Kudos to whomever changed the subject line from "A LSU joke" to "An LSU joke" - it was bugging me all day!

    Ok, it sounds better, but technically what makes it better? Wouldn't "an" go with a vowel and "a" with a consonant? L is a consonant, therefore "a", right? Not being smarts**, just wondering.

    Not an English major here, so this may be wrong, but my general rule of thumb is to write/type it as I would pronounce/say it out loud. So if I would pronounce "LSU" as "ELLE SSS YOU", then I'd use "an". If I would pronounce it as "Louisiana State University" then I'd use "a".
