Dinardo was too loyal to assistant coaches who were not getting the job done, Tepper should have been let go after one season. Gerry did not leave a bare cupboard for Nick.
I agree. But I don't think you should ever underestimate the Visor - as has been said many times - love him or hate him, he can motivate and he can find a way to win.
While South Carolina did play very close games with a few teams last year it's important to note the QB change. Blake Mitchell was horrible in opener, then Spurrier switched to Syvelle Newton was as decent as a passer, but an even greater threat running the ball. They don't have that threat with Mitchell, don't have that threat with Chris Smelley (back-up) and the only threat Stephen Garcia has right now is if he can stay out of jail or not. Living in S. Carolina, all I hear everyday is how they are going to win the East.
I'm worried about VT, Florida, Auburn, and even Alabama. But I'm not worried about SC. They are perennial losers, and "coming close" to winning the big games is not the same as winning them. We should know because that just about sums up the 90's for LSU fans. In all those years, we had about 3 really big wins: Alabama '93, Auburn '95, and Florida '97. But as a previous poster pointed out: teams like LSU from the 90's and SC from FOREVER aren't consistent enough to get the job done week in and week out. Spurrier, even at Florida, only managed to win the NC ONCE. I think the $100 bet was a crazy one...
And, if you think about it, most of the credit for the NC in '96 was due to the defense Bob Stoops fielded that year. FWIW, if you go into Williams Bryce you'll see the sign about their last conference championship. 1967 was the year, if I recall correctly.
Fixed it for you Red. :hihi: I don't know about that TerryP. Their offense was pretty awesome too. That was just a complete team. You do raise a good point that is often lost though -- Spurrier's better teams had some great defense. I'm not overly concerned about South Carolina. Of course I'm in perpetual awe of Spurrier, but don't think he's got the squad to run with LSU for four quarters. Like was said earlier (TigerBait3 I think), only LSU can beat LSU in that game.
The national champs needed 2 blocked FG's to win at home. This was the same team that destroyed Ohio State by 27 points.
