....and he didn't mention Bowden, Urban Meyer, or himself. Stop crying over spilled milk. Some of us need to start looking at things in a more objective point of view as opposed to seeing everything with purple and gold glasses. Saban is undoubtedly a top 5 college coach, but if I were to make a list, Stoops and Carroll would probably top it off. Someone on this thread used national title to gauge a coaches worth, asking where Carroll's was. That is a flawed way to measure a coaches worth. During Spurrier's 12 year run, he was only able to snag one national title and UF was one of the best teams year in year out throughout Spurrier's run. The chips have to fall perfectly to win a national title.
Definitely way off on this one. Saban is #1 with Stoops a close 2nd. Carroll just has an awesome offensive coordinator doing all his work for him, making him look good. Carroll is not even in my top 3.
I would like to hear your reasoning as to why Saban is definitely first. I tend to believe it the homerism cause Stoops has accomplished a bit more than Saban. Why I think Stoops is first: Stoops second season at OU he goes 13-0 and wins the Big 12 championship and national championship. His 3rd season he leads OU to 11-2. His 4th season he leads OU to 12-2 and another Big 12 championship. His 5th season he makes another appearance in the national championship game. This year he has OU at #2 for the entire year and most likely a 3rd apprearance in the national title game. Stoops is 55-11-0 at OU and Saban is 39-13-0 at LSU. Stoops does all this in a state that doesn't have nearly as much football talent as Louisiana, that means he has to recruit that much harder. Now I'd like to hear your argument as to why Saban is a clear cut first over Stoops. An argument other than just the fact that he's our head coach.
The quote was concerning the best in the game right now . Bowden is definitely not what he used to be. The question with him is will he hang around too long like JoePa until he is completely washed up. We'll include Urban Meyer when he comes in and plays with the big boys for a few years. Stoops is #1, but OU historically recruits Texas just like it was their home state, always have and always will. They have a huge talent pool to pull from. Not every kid in Texas can or wants to go to UT or A&M.
Well, like the others said, you need to take off the blinders. Not having Carroll in your top 3 scares me to tell you the truth, who would be in your top 3. And having Nick at number one proves how prejudiced you can be when it concerns LSU I guess, which may not be a bad thing. But it doesn't lend itself to making a sound, resonable decision. Stoops, Carroll and Saban all came into very similar situations, turned around programs that were once great but had fallen on hard times. All 3 follwed at least one coach that was horrible and had left the programs a total mess. All 3 are konwn as defensive geniuses and have given the offensive coordinators pretty much full rein, Stoops is a little more involved with his offense than Saban and Carroll and he actually lets his defensive coordiantors do more than the other 2. But they are remarkably similar in the way they have brought back the pride in their programs, have recruited the best players in the country, have worked on getting the entire program to the top and are trying to develope well rounded student athletes. All 3 have done wonderful jobs and I do admit that maybe USC and OU coaches may have had a little easier time of getting thebbest players due to having even a bigger name on the national scene as well as more championships in the past, so maybe Saban is leading in that area. However, to say that Carroll has one OC doing his work for him is total BS. The heart and soul of USC's team is it's defense, even though I thin kNorm Chow is an excellent OC. Plus any great coach's main job other than recruiting is getting the best staff and Carroll, as well as Saban and Stoops has done that. To knock a coach for his coordinator being good is pretty silly. Name all of the great coaches in the past 25 years of such specializtion in the game and I would be willing to bet that every onee of them had a few very good or great assistants. Like I said earlier, I would have to rate Stoops as the best, Carroll as second best and Saban in a group right behind them at this time, based solely on the results, which is the only way to rate them. If Nick can keep us in the top 5 year in and year out he would move into the top 3 I reckon. And saying Bowden doesn't have it any longer I think is also a mistake, the guy will bring his Noles back to the top, they have exactly dropped down to PSU's level.
carroll would not be in my top 3 either. I know if i was hiring a head coach it would be NS so I suppose I would rank him #1 on his defensive genius mind alone. Add to that his moral fiber, his ability to evaluate quality people as well as talent and therein lies my answer. Stoops would be 2nd on my list given that Saban already proved he can outcoach him by a longshot. Recruiting Oklahoma is tougher? Only if you think it doesn't extend into texas after kicking their ass every year. texas is basically OU south when it comes down to recruiting. See Mr. Peterson. I don't think Carroll is a great coach based on the conference he plays in. He gets great talent but being he is the supposed defensive expert, I sure don't see much when watching his defensive schemes. I see a talented defensive underperforming against average teams most of the time. My top 3 would be Nick Saban, Bob Stoops and Steve Spurrier. All 3 have NC's in the toughest conferences around. They are well tested and very proven. Not many others have the pedigree that these 3 have.
I think that you have to look at what each coach started with, and what they have now.. Stoops inherited a championship program.. both carroll and saban inherited programs that were in the toilet, but had good recruiting potential.. then they coached and recruited their way to the top... So, Saban, then Carroll... dont know that i would put Stoops third...
OU won a total of 17 games during the four years preceding Stoops taking over. They had not finished above 500 in six years! If that's not considered "in the toilet"... It's hardly a championship program, that's for sure. They may have won championships in the past, but it had been many years. Make no mistake, the program Stoops inherited was a wreck. And, he won the MNC in his second year. I'd say he's a pretty fair coach.
Not even an argument, Bob Stoops has won a National Title and will be going to the title game for the second year in a row. Stoops hasnt lost a regular season game since the middle of 2002 season I think. Id say he is a damn good coach.
thanks, was too lazy to look up the stats. so I guess Ty Willingham inherited a top 2 program as well. :hihi: :hihi: :hihi: :hihi: maybe a top 2 independent.
