Well let me be honest, the game is almost a joke anyway. I have relatives that graduated from Southern, hell my first cousin was a Golden Girl for 4 years. But its a fashion show and social event. I wouldnt even consider it a sporting event, not even the game. I have been a few times myself, but it got old fast. However, I dont think that gesture was racist, if it was an all white band, would people consider it racist then?

I guess if Mcain had won and LSU spelled out his name some people would grumble.

And I agree about the Bayou Classic in general. But the fans do spend a lot of money in N.O., so It's fine with me.

My high school band spelled out LINCOLN once and played Battle Hymn of the Republic. The irony was that our mascot was The Rebels and the band was wearing Confederate artillery officer's uniforms.

I hope they spend a lot of money. The city needs it. It's also usually the #1 day annually for auto theft in the city. Many businesses don't even stay open because they got tired of being robbed.

Has Southern or Grambling ever spelled out "Clinton" or "Carter" or "Blanco"? If not, why "Obama"?

I think politics need to stay out of tax payer funded schools. If it wasn't a political statement, then what was it? A salute to the fact he's a minority? Is that necessary? At what point is enough...enough? Will we need to name a street, building, park, arena, convention center in every city after him? The guy hasn't even been sworn in yet. :dis:

Had McCain won and any school (public or private) spelled his name do you honestly believe ABC, NBC, CNN, MSNBC, and CBS would have passed up on the opportunity to turn this into an issue about race? You know they would be all over it!

Jackson & Sharpton would've been marching in the streets demanding the removal of the dean, president, and band director.

We can overcome race, color, bias, prejudice, etc....but we will NEVER do it as long as we continue these double standards!

I hadn't heard this. All I know is that Mothers was open. And I'm sure glad they were. Yummy.

    That's irony right there.

On the main topic, Grambling and Southern are predominately black colleges and the bands were playing to a predominately black audience. I would have been more surprised if they did not do something to comemorate the recent history making election.
