I think the NCAA should go NFL style. Gather 32 of the best major football programs and put 16 in the East conference, 16 in the West then 4 divisions of 4 teams each. Instill an NFL style playoff system - may the best team win it all.

The word that come to my mind after I read this article is ...WRONG!

    1. Moving from a conference that is rapidly imploding to the SEC is not going it alone.

    2. The traditional rivalry between A&M and Texas does not have to go away. Pres. Loftin has said that. Texas has dropped threats but that is pretty much bluff I think. Probably the next biggest rivalry is with Arkansas and they play them every year in the Southwest Classic in Dallas. Oklahoma is more of just a conference game than a rivalry. Adding LSU, Alabama, Auburn etc. and I think you get the picture.

    3. The SEC has stated that it does not intend to expand within it's current footprint so that leaves out Florida State. He needs to do his homework.

Anyway no matter. The snowball is rolling and A&M to the SEC is pretty much a done deal I think, and soon. The only question I have is who is the other team needed to balance out the divisions. Virginia Tech is the one most mentioned, but to me that is not the one that makes the most sense.

    Who Knows?

North Carolina is being mentioned lately as a potential team to join the SEC. Clemson has always been rumored as the team the SEC would go after.

Clemson is likely a "no go" for the same reason that F$U is unable to be considered.

North Carolina would need to be a partner deal .... they're not going anywhere without Duke, and Duke isn't likely to become an SEC program.

If the SEC was going to broker a partner deal, it would most likely approach Okalahoma/Ok. State before the SEC would consider NC/Dook.

Va Tech and NC State are the two programs I keep hearing mentioned, with Mizzou and Maryland on the outside looking-in.

My personal preference would be FSU and Ga Tech as options towards a 16 team conference.

I'd like to see Ga Tech as well but Slive has already said the SEC has no plans to expand within their own footsteps. Meaning Fla State and Ga Tech are more than likely out of the question. Va Tech is a popular choice and have not thought about NC State. However, it should happen fairly quickly since this aTm departure from the Big 12 is rapidly taking place.

I wonder if aTm would transition to the style of play in the SEC and do fine? If they join the SEC they'd have one of the best recruiting bases in the country and would have the instant recruiting draw of "We play in the SEC. The best conference in college football." I'm not sure they'd take Vanderbilt's place on the whippin post.

Heard on 1210 this morning that ATM sent their conference chairman paperwork starting the process to pull out. They said on the radio that atm's deal to join the sec is done and v-tech would be the eastern addition. No link just what was reported.

That scenario sounds very likely so I can't argue it. Expansion is inevitable so we might as well embrace it and move forward.

Does anyone else get the feeling that adding aTm and VaTech to the SEC is like farting in a flower shop?

I mean adding those 2 teams really brings the conference down IMO. Especially VaTech. That team has been so over-rated for so long, I don't know how they can even be a thought for the SEC to add.

The whole thing just stinks to me. :po:
