In academia, almost no one falsifies degrees or the amount of research dollars acquired, they know that stuff will be checked. Where I find padding is usually in the lists of publications. Lesser candidates are prone to listing contract reports, proposals, abstracts, and even poster sessions as "publications". Some have impressive-sounding names . . . they have just never actually been published.
