you do not want to give drunk mobs of kids something to rebel against. you want to give them something to agree with. ask nicely. disagreements are a cycle. the more you clamp down on them or throw them out more they troublemake. instead of pulling kids from the stands and giving them a "dont tase me bro" moment, you make em feel like jerks and they self regulate.
Maybe the band should play one song, over and over again, just like USC. Seriously though. I think this whole debate has been blown out of proportion. It was the right mix of rain, alcohol, and impatience that set off the F-Spurrior chant, not to mention a bunch of frat boys thought it would be cool. The chant started by the band from what I saw. I am almost positive it will be just a one time thing....i hope.
Re: "Band Bleeps" - Yep, I'm one of the old farts that thinks civility NEVER goes out of style. I was in the Tiger Band and I remember there were certain times (like while there was a play on the field) we were not supposed to play. O.K., so that was 35 years ago (when freshmen couldn't play) and I know things change. Maybe that's not a rule anymore.
How many times has the student section ever chanted FU *insert name here*? As far as I remember it has only been ONCE, last week, and that's it. Yes, what happened crossed the line and I didn't participate in it but it only happened once and more than likely isn't going to happen again. Although having a message played on the jumbotron to refrain from vulgarities from one of the players everyone likes, i.e. Dorsey, would work wonders.
I remember more than a few rounds of "FU refs" back in the day. It's not an every game occurance, but it's not like this is the first time our student section has crossed a line. Certainly having a jumbotron announcement (Dorsey, "Don't make me taser you, bro!") would help on the occasions that it does happen.
