The SWC was a decent conference and during Broyles haydays of the '60 might have been the toughest conference, the aggies and Rice gave LSU fits on a few occassions then. Arkansas took a much bigger hit than expected in recruiting when they left the SWC. The annual trips to metro Houston and Dallas were out and with that two of their best resruitng bases dried up. The lure of small town nothing-ness (opposed to Oxburn and Starkaloosa's small town boring-ness) appleals to some kids. The Hogs have pulled some players out of Birmingham and Atlanta, but not like they did with Texas metro areas in the '60's. I'm not defending Arkansas, but Nutt has done a credible job. Ole Miss had more talent and still Nutt's been to the championship game as many times as Alabama over the past 10 season. Yeah, it would be different if the Razorbacks would actually score a touchdown in the championship, let alone win the game, but you don't see a concrete slab in the end zone in Fayetteville thumping their chest a la MSU, or the pitiful "almosts...if...Eli" begging just win ONCE from Mississippi. He's not Saban or Miles, but I'd put him up against the likes of Tuberville and Fulmer.
It wasnt. It was just a fact. LSU will live off that title for a long time. I see no problem in Auburn living off of a 13-0 season in which they were screwed. But, some will always take everything I say in a negative way.
I'm sorry I just can't agree that the SWC which was full of TCU, Baylor, Texas Tech, Rice, SMU, Houston, and even A&M types was ever the equal of the SEC with Bama; Auburn; UGA; LSU; Tennessee; and if you want to go back to thre 60's include Ole Miss. In fact, in Arkansas' heyday back in the 60's, with Arkansas as the defending National Champs and riding a 22 game win streak, a 7-3 LSU team went to the 1966 Cotton Bowl and stopped the Hogs from winning their second consecutive MNC by beating the Pigs 14-7. If you look at the all-time head to head results, LSU has dominated Baylor(LSU leads 8-3); Rice(LSU 37-13-5); and A&M(LSU leads 26-20-3). Even against Arkansas the series is in LSU's favor 31-17-2. That is the truth of those series. It is also no coincidence that Arkansas fell on hard times when they stopped playing a schedule full of Houston; Baylor; Rice; TCU; SMU; and Texas Tech and began playing a schedule full of Tennessee; LSU; Alabama; Auburn; UGA; Florida; etc. Consider this, since Arkansas joined the SEC, three different SEC teams have won National Titles (Florida; Tennessee; LSU) and it may be 4 as Bama won it in 1992. Regardless, in that same time period, NONE of the former SWC teams have won much of anything and Texas has become OU's whipping boy. That is no mere coincidence. JMO.
Fair, but Houston, although not a member of the SWC until '71 was whipping Ole Miss, State, and Auburn, and giving Bama a handful. Texas schools haven't been able to lock down the state a al Saban and that is the biggest reason why they're not winning big. The Universities of Texas at Norman, Lincoln, Boulder etc a loaded with players that Arkansas and SWC schools used to get. I tried to give you credit for valid points, but... You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to STRIPES again.
Auburn shouldn't be talking 13-0. That's ancient history by now. Auburn will suck so bad this year because they lost all those guys to the FIRST ROUND of the NFL draft. And it's not like they have decent guys returning. LSU is a LOCK for the SEC Championship game. :dis: :dis: :dis: :dis: :thumb:
