So.... does Spurrier fall into the great mind/great coach category? Urban Meyer?

    Phil Fulmer?

Spurrier - definitely. Meyer - we'll see. Phil - not a great football mind.

Still disagree, but I can see your points as it follows what many do believe.

A good example might be Mike Martz. I don't think that anyone would disagree that he has a great offensive mind, but as a coach I don't think he was great. His teams had some success, but for the most part underachieved.

Many of Martz's decisions were questionable, especially those dealing with personel and game management. I think there in lies the problem. As with most geniuses, football wizards can often be a little eccentric. Poor decision making in areas outside of there given field of expertise is not uncommen. So, it is my opinion that having a great football mind does not always transfer to being a great coach. There is more to it than X' and O's. Of course I'm not saying that you can't be a great coach if you have a great football mind. They are not exclusive.

Actually, that's where I was headed... or was tryin' to go.

Speaking of Dennis Green (weren't we??), who is neither.... can you believe the guy was a running back at Iowa.

Fair enough. I am glad you took the time to explain yourself, rather than take my comments personally. To me, I just feel that none of us really have no good idea of how things really are now compared to when Saban was there are far as discipline goes.

As far as the "great football mind" comments in reference to Saban, I suspect very few if any LSU fans thought of Saban as a great football mind before he came to LSU and had success.

actually he was offered more than one job before he came here as indicated in the SI article recently. hes always been known as a great football mind amongst peers even at the nfl level since his cleveland days. and i think i was the lone voice outside of emmert who wanted him at the time. I was on record as saying so, though Im not represented well enough to prove it currently. so you'll have to take my word. Although I must admit I wasnt in love with him as I am currently. our love developed over time.

tirk, your post sounds like your love with saban could be borderline inappropriate and illegal. :hihi::wink:

Because LSU lost so many Road games last year?? Hey Big sausage man, you exposed yourself in your "Florida reigns supreme" posts on another board. Not surprised you don't want to see Coach Miles take apart Meyer's offense again.
