    Thanks. Iconcheers.gif
Then what was the purpose of building it if it caused more harm than good?

I've been watching TWC off & on. Excellent coverage. The consensus is there will be more damage done by rain than wind.

in this particular situation it would not have helped.

it was built to relieve pressure pushing on the levee, which at the moment is not a major concern.

Wgen opened it relieves the pressure on tbe levee walls. As Nootch said a breach or collapse in the levee would be much worse than topping the levee. They measure the flow at per million cubic feet of water per second.

    yep.
now the only question is who gets the big rains that are still offshore.
NOLA cannot handle those amounts of rain.

The level of oversimplification you are applying is astounding. Fluids are only level in a contained static space. A river is fluid in pursuit of a static space and far from level, no matter what your eyes tell you. Its basic hydrology unless you believe the world is flat. Your contention that none of it has any impact is in contradiction with the fact that they open it at all. At any rate, I am done trying to educate you. I will respond accordingly from now on.

Thanks. In terms that I can understand, roughly how much is a million cubic feet of water per second? Sounds like a hell of a lot.

Niagara Falls averages around 85,000 cubic feet per second.
