I can see that but frankly the fan support in this game and all that has happened has grabbed me. I plan to follow LSU BB more closely and will get to some games next year. If the host a NIT game this year I will try to make it. I think the evolution of this year's team and the recruits coming in next year shows promise and a reason to be hopeful.
If you're not happy with LSU basketball right now, then you're an idiot. And i don't like having idiots fans in the fanbase, do you? So who cares if this loss to ole miss isn't helping us attract idiots to jump on board? As for bandwagon fans, i am a bandwagon fan. If LSU starts to stink in a sport, I'm going to quit watching that sport until LSU quits stinking in it. With basketball, although i was indifferent about the TJ hire, i jumped all over the bandwagon in TJ's first year when we went 27-8 and 13-3 in the SEC and were SEC Champs and played a hell of an NCAAT and Marcus Thornton was SEC Player of the Year. Then we went straight to stinking badly, so i lost interest For the first time since then, I'm excited about LSU basketball again. Why? Well, duh, we just went 8-4 (67%) in our last 12 SEC games, 9-5 (64%) in our last 14 SEC games...and that is after going 0-7 in our previous 7 regular season SEC games before that (1-8 counting the SECT) now let's say we go to the SECT and NIT and immediately get blown out 80-10 in both games. Will i start losing interest? Probably not. Why? Because our recruiting class is currently ranked Top 10 by scout and espn (couldn't find rivals). When is the last time that has happened? The only other SEC team in their top 10 are Florida and Kentucky, who won 3 of the last 6 National Titles Now sure, maybe we lose all our recruits and maybe we lose our next 20 games But right now, today, I'm very happy with LSU basketball
If you want to pack an arena/stadium, in a sport with a fan culture that has been lacking for many, many years for whatever reasons, then you need bandwagon, or "idiot", casual (whatever) fans, to accomplish that. As you and others have pointed out, recruiting buzz alone may do that, but I think we missed an opportunity today to build on recent momentum by not keeping the game close, for a crowd that wanted to get into it. That's my only point, and it was made in the larger context of the attendance discussion we've been having for some time. LSU is full of those fans, by the way, and the AD will gladly take their money if they're given a reason to spend it. Don't believe me? Go see an SEC game in Tiger Stadium. Do you think all of those people pumping big money into TAF for season tickets are die-hard LSU fans and would see the team play if they averaged 4 wins a year? Or is a fairly large percentage bandwagon fans who jumped on board in the early 2000s when the program was on the rise again? And nowhere did I say I wasn't happy with the program right now, quite the opposite. Any coach who can take Del Piero and make him a serviceable SEC center in such a short time knows what he's doing. I am, however, keeping expectations for Johnny Jones measured until we see how his first few classes mature and progress in his system.
