I read the post I responded to as "last few years" so I guess we could debate what "few" means... or the word "is", if you want... Actually, interesting you would bring up the "what have you done lately" thingy, as a while back I did a comparison of our programs and we had almost the exact same record since 1980. I'm sure you've pulled ahead now with our last two crappy seasons. You guys were down some in the 90's, us in the late 90's, but our run from about 80 to 95 was quite respectable. How did we get on this subject? and, no, I seldom, if ever, bring up our bowl game with you guys... I was simply responding to a post, not starting one...
Still hanging your hat on that last second miracle huh? Man that's alot to be proud of. I was pretty bitter after that game for a while simply because I have a friend who is from Iowa who liked to rub that in alot. I did some research after the game though and found out some suprising results that like 65% of ya'lls roster is out of state guys including Tate who's like from 3 hours away from baton rouge. Even this year it's fairly similar (64 out of 99) Is it just a tough luck area for talent or is that just Ferentz philosophy on getting alot of out of state kids.?
sorry I'm on our school network and this thing is screwing up big time so that's why it kinda says the same thing twice. that's cool man not trying to take a shot just a question.
We've always had to go out of state to get players. Not only is Iowa a small state, we have a very low percentage of black players. Not to start a whole racial discussion, but facts are facts. Plus we have to share recruits with the mustard and ketchup folks over in Ames. We generally recruit Chicago well, especially when the Huskers and Domers have down years, Fry created a Texas pipeline, which still exists, and we do okay in Florida... not sure why, probably just too many players versus available schollies... and Ferentz has links to some Ohio and western PA kids, being from there. On the "Ferentz Philosophy", he looks (1) for kids with good footwork and body frames that can be filled out over a few years and (2) He recruits a lot of kids who have leadership attributes. This year, 20 of our 22 recruits were high school team captains.
The Heisman is probably the biggest joke in college sports and has been for the last 20 years. We hear the East Coast versus West Coast bias year after year but the one area that is always overlooked is the southeast...which just happens to be where the best football is played! Do you think Peyton Manning would have finished #2 had he played at USC, Notre Dame, Ohio State, or Michigan? You know the answer. If a kid wants to go to one of those schools simply to have a shot at the Heisman, then that's the type of player I don't want on our team. The whole "It's all about me!" attitude is something we don't need to deal with. If you're not a team player, then go somewhere else. Former Heisman winners get to vote each year. If you don't think PC reminded McKnight about that fact every five minutes, then I have some swampland...I mean beachfront property to sell you in Louisiana.
I stated last few years meaning more than two, maybe I mis-spoke? Surely 2 national championships should count for something? Florida over OSU and LSU over OU? Then there is USC over UM and OU? I do have to give it to you since your team won the game with a hail mary. This is why I am glad Saban is gone, Hell of a way to lose the game playing a gambling type of defense. It seems to me that the Big Ten, Eleven and Twelve hasn't done to well versus other conferences in the post season from what I recall. SEC is still #1 in football or am I wrong?
I agree with that. Troy Smith actually won the heisman before season started, they just wanted to delay it so it wouldn't seem unfair. He had a great season, very efficient...but he only had a couple good games. The general consensus was that if he kept up his consistently good stats that he would win it and thats a joke. They were not allowing any others to compete for it, although it was a weak year overall. Maybe Colt Brennan was deserving, but a player for Hawaii as evidenced by this past year will never win it because he broke a lot of records this year. It's become more of a "who was the most important player on the team that's #1 right now award"
In my example of a "few years", I was using five, not two... Secondly, I don't come on here to gloat about the Iowa/Lsu game. I like this forum to follow what else is going on outside the Big Ten... it's a good forum for keeping up... Thirdly, the Big Ten is 8-6 against the SEC in bowl games over the last five years... we also have a winning bowl record against the ACC over that period and we're 3-4 against the Big 12... but we are 2-5 against the pac 10 with USC beating us three times. So I'm not sure if your comment about how we've done against other conferences in bowls is all that accurate... my guess is you've been watching Michigan "die" in their bowl games and not paying much attention to the rest of the teams. It happens... the Big Two and all that stuff...
Adrian Peterson got hurt. And that's pretty much the whole reason. Peterson runs(pun intended) away with it if he doesn't get hurt. He rushed for 935 yards and 10 TDs in 6 games before he broke his collarbone. It wouldn't have even been close.
