Duke in basketball is like usc in football. If anyone beats them it is a major story, but it is only an upset to those who swallow all the hype whole. LSU may win or lose, but you are in this game because you deserve to be. Duke is good, but they are not the Showtime Lakers.
I think a better comparison would be Duke(basketball) is like Miami(football) of the 90's. USC's run is way too short to be compared to Duke's years of dominance.
i agree with that, but duke is a 6.5 favorite over us tonight. if you were comparing the football programs, we would probably be about a 20 point favorite over them. being the favorite is one thing, but i think the gap in the programs is greater on the football field, thats all
It is more an attribute inference than a conventional comparison. Media portrayal of Duke, usc, and other dominant programs is that of the unchallengeable foe. usc is used due to the media involvement during the bogus 3-peat campaign.
I agree that this wouldn't be anywhere near the biggest upset in LSU basketball history, much less overall LSU sports. So let's limit it to basketball. My candidates would be: beating the Kentucky team that went on to won the national championship, back in... 77 or 78? in OT, with all 5 starters out; the 1986 Final Four run with wins over Kentucky, Ga. Tech and Memphis State; and the beating we put on #1 Arizona a few years ago before that team was widely recognized as being pretty good.
Here's my candidates for biggest upset: 1. Basketball win over #1 Kentucky in 1978 2. Football win over #1 Florida in 1997 3. Lowest seeded basketball team to ever make the final four 1986 4. unheralded LSU wins the 2003 National Football Championship 5. Warren Morris Home run wins 1996 College World Series
I gotta go with you here. I was going to write the same thing. Us as an 11 seed making it to the Final Four is still the lowest seed to EVER do so.
And I'll never forget the 1st two games at the PMAC. A thrilling double OT win over Purdue and then the Anthony Wilson shot to beat Memphis State. Two of the best games I've ever seen in the PMAC...
