A group of 32 black football players at the University of Missouri announced on Saturday night that they're going on strike, demanding the resignation of the university system's president before they'll play again.

A graduate student at the University of Missouri was already on a hunger strike to demand President Tim Wolfe's resignation, after controversy surrounding a string of racist incidents at the university.

Started on Nov 2nd. 6 days already. I at least hope Wolfe takes it to the limit to see how far he'll actually go.

They're claiming that black students are being oppressed and treated less than human. Wolfe and Loftin are being targeted for not responding in full force to these three specific issues:
1. The student body president, a black male, was called n****r, while walking off campus. 2. A student called a black student group n****rs and was removed from the school.
3. A swastika was placed on a dorm wall via feces. No suspect is known.
Loftin took a week to assess the situation and recommended a diversity program. Wolfe tended to other matters.

A black student group interrupted the Mizzou homecoming parade, surrounded Wolfes car, and put on a visible protest/organized chant. They wore shirts stating, "Built on my b(l)ack" referencing Mizzou being built with slave labor. Police allowed them to conclude their chant and peaceably removed them from the roadway. The student group complained that Wolfe did not engage them in dialogue during the parade.

They proceeded to place post it notes on the school's statue of Thomas Jefferson to protest systemic racial oppression at Mizzou. The post it's said things like, "racist", "slave raper", etc. Wolfe met with the group unofficially and the diversity program was put into effect. The group wasn't pleased and sent their set of demands.

The demands included: Wolfe must apologize for all recent racist actions (including the off campus event), Wolfe must resign, 10% of faculty must become black by a certain date, and mandatory diversity training must be given to veryone on campus created by a black leader. Wolfe ignored the list and the grad student is now starving himself to death until Wolfe leaves. No students have been physically harmed. No protests have been suppressed. No specific events have been egregiously handled. They didn't get their way and now a kid is starving himself.

From a Missouri student on another site:

This guy is a grad student - and well on his way to becoming a professional activist/organizer. He was in several photos in the campus newspaper's timeline of fall activities and protests on campus, organizing people and yelling into a bulhorn. He will cave, because he won't be able to effect social change or lead protests on the injustice of it all if he's dead. People like this are narcissists. He's saying "Look at me!!!!" And getting exactly what he wants.

I am too lazy to read about this in depth. Isn't the story basically that one guy claimed somebody called him a name?
