I think Croyle might have a decent career. Beyond that, anyone know who has replaced the NO WR coach (John Morton) who recently left?

Looks like a great pick up for NO and a great resume as far as WR's go. What's he been doing since 2005 and wonder why he left Miami?

John Morton was actually technically an offensive assistant to the passing game last season. I got a chance to listen to him on the December 18th edition of the Saints Coach's Show (The Sean Payton show, ostensibly) on WWL Radio 870am here in New Orleans.

Curtis Johnson was our WR coach last season, and was credited with helping Devery Henderson emerge as our deep threat and develop Marques Colston as he burst onto the scene. Curtis is a New Orleans native.

Anyway, I do a transcript of every Saints radio show for whodatzone.com.. I have been for years now. I didn't miss one Sean Payton or Joe Horn show last year.

It was a pleasure listening to John Morton speak and I predicted he'll be a head coach very soon in college or the NFL. He talks a lot like Tampa coach Jon Gruden..

Here's the excerpt from that December 18th radio show with John Morton:

(Kenny = Kenny Wilkerson, Saints sideline reporter; Bobby = Bobby Hebert, former Saints and Falcons pro bowl quarterback)

Kenny: Thank you, Coach.

Payton: Thank you.

<< Commercial Break 7:00 p.m. >>

Kenny: We're joined now by offensive assistant John Morton who goes by many titles around here. Do they call you Johnny Morton?

Kenny: Alright, Johnny Mo. What is it you do?

Morton: I'm basically a West Coast Offense guy. I deal with everything having to do with the west coast offense, all aspects of the passing game. When Coach Payton hired his coaches not all of them had familiarity with the WCO, so my job is to be there when he isn't to make sure things run smoothly. I look at different game tapes, I'm really another pair of eyes for Coach Payton. I deal with statistics, balance issues, personnel groupings, and I go over every single game tape. That's one thing I learned from Coach Gruden. A lot of guys just break down your last four games. I look at every single game film, because as Coach Gruden said you never know when you see that one play that will win a game for you. So I go through it all and look for mismatches.

Bobby: The only time I ran the West Coast Offense was a waterd-down version Coach Shanahan put in when I went to the Pro Bowl. It's all based on 3 and 5 step drops and getting the ball out quickly, right?

Morton: Absolutely. Without question it's about quick passes and going through your progressions. by the time you hit that third or fifth step the ball should be coming out. In this offense, everyone should have a catch. It's all about going from your first to second to your third reads.

Kenny: Drew runs it well, doesn't he?

Morton: I've been around some great quarterbacks. I was around Gannon, and Drew is one of the best.

Bobby: It's not about a rocket arm, I remember one year I could barely throw the ball from here to the wall, but I knew where to go with the ball and I had 24 touchdowns. I think Drew's got the knowledge that the rocket arm doesn't matter.

Morton: Without question. I'll take a quarterback with outstanding decision-making and intelligence over a rocket arm anyday. You also have to remember Drew's rehab really hurt him because while he was able to watch a lot of our practices early on, it's the repetition in this offense that makes you comfortable in it. He's been getting better and better.

Kenny: So this is really a rhythm offense, when you see Drew hit Devery in stride on a deep ball it's all about being in rhythm.

Morton: Without question it's about being on the same page. All eleven guys. Look, you have to be able to catch the ball when it's thrown your way. That's what your paid to do. You have to be able to block and hit the right receiver. This is your job. What was most disappointing yesterday was we didn't go out there and put forth the best effort.

Kenny: Drew has amazing pocket awareness.

Morton: He does, and it's something we work on, I work on it with Drew and the QB coach, with what I call the Gannon Drill. I learned it while with Rich Gannon. You line up 3 tackling dummies as if they are defensive linemen, you snap the ball to Drew, and then the QB coach chases him around as if he's a DL chasing him, hanging on him, then Drew has to hit a wide receiver running any number of routes. It's come into play and helped I think this year.

Kenny: How often does that one mismatch happen that you look for?

Morton: Oh, man, it does. It happens. During gameday I have a chart, and I keep track of downs and distances and situations and I talk to Coach Payton, I see what the defense is doing in any given situation and I alert Coach Payton when another situation comes up when we can maybe take advantage of something they're doing.

Morton was a fantastic guest. Perhaps the best assistant to listen to thus far. He sounds almost exactly like Gruden. He's incredibly fun to hear talk football, and I wouldn't be shocked if in 5-10 years he's in line for his own NFL or college gig.

Bobby referred to Morton as the little angel on Coach Payton's shoulders whispering plays.

I'd love to land Bowe or Buster Davis.. Mike Detillier has the Saints nabbing USC's Steve Smith in the second round.

Thanks for the info. I attended 4 practices this Spring and Coach Morton is great. He really works on skill basics and technique. Some of the drills were different than I've seen in the past and the players obviously took some time getting used to them. With the departure of DJ and Steve Smith the WR corps was a huge question mark. Morton has changed that around in very short time.

If Steve Smith went to the Saints, I'd be one VERY happy Cali Girl.
