From what I understand it was Cameron Ironworks. Oceaneering made the part that failed to cut it off afterwards.

This is exactly what the environmentalists have been hoping for. We will not see any new drilling offshore in our lifetimes.

The fact that BP was neglagant and didnt spend the 500k to install the acoustic shut off valve is gonna be the saving grace for new drilling.

Had it been installed and just failed then I would agree with ya but since the safety features were not in place what we will see is extreme safety precautions going into place.

I haven't heard anything yet, but I'll ask around, and keep you posted.

there was a safety measure in place.
the Blowout Preventor was supposed to shut that thing down when there is any sudden surge in pressure. And remained closed until the pressure gets back down to suitable levels.

For whatever reason, the BOP failed.
That technically isn't BP's fault (assuming it was installed correctly).
Though in the court of public opinion, this will be put squarely on their shoulders.

Just like in your car, or washing machine, or refrigerator, parts can and do fail.
Fortunately, it is extremly rare that a BOP completely fails like this.
Which is why you never hear of accidents like this.

Anytime you are drilling, you use a mud/water mixture to keep the pressure down in the drill pipe/casing.

A mud engineer decide what weight of the mixture is needed. This is done by calculated guesses as to what pressure they are going to hit.

For example, if they are expected to find 5000# pounds of pressure, they will use a certain mixture.
If they actually hit 12,000#, that mud will be nowhere near sufficient enough, and a huge surge will shoot back up the pipe.
The BOP is designed to shut the pipe off completely, not allowing that surge to get high enough to do any damage, and remained closed until they can get the right mud mixture down and neutralize the pressure.
