Fortunately, money is becoming available to help people who have been effected by this. I work for a grant writing agency and am seeing both government, and private money, grants being made to help people along the coast.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The White House has been deeply involved in the effort to staunch the Gulf of Mexico oil spill from the start but may have made a mistake by failing to communicate effectively about its efforts, Vice President Joe Biden said on Wednesday.
"I think if there's any mistake made (it's) that we haven't communicated clearly enough what the president has done on this oil spill from the beginning," Biden said in the transcript of an interview with PBS' Charlie Rose television show.
"We were there the first day, the first morning after that well ... blew and that platform collapsed. We were in the Oval Office," Biden said. "He mobilized everyone in the White House in the West Wing, made it clear that every single asset of the federal government should be made available."
President Barack Obama, facing one of the biggest challenges of his presidency, is under relentless pressure to stop the gush of oil and gas from the broken BP Plc oil well far below the surface of the Gulf.
The weekend failure of a "top kill" technique BP attempted to try to seal the well has unleashed a surge of anger and public criticism that poses a major domestic challenge to Obama and his fellow Democrats in an election year.

if there is gonna be any kind of pressure that might be effective, it is gonna be political pressure. pressure to throroughly clean house at mms and scrutinize all permits and who signed off on them. heads need to roll from top, to bottom, there too.

i agree with fanatic that hayward is gonna get his golden parachute and never feel the pain. there needs to be political pressure for the govt (whether it is state or federal) tostart looking at criminal charges of some sort, and/or how to name hayward and other bp execs in civil lawsuits to go after them, as well as the company.

Okie, you're not being cynical EVERYTHING politicians do is political. He is trying to draw attention to the Senate campaign, but right now Melancon is in the US House of Representatives and his district is ground zero for oil spill effects. As far as political grandstanding goes...I'm going to cut a lot of slack to any Louisiana politicians from the parish level to congress. The rest of them...none.

I want Obama to stop wasting gas and coming down and blowing hot air. It wastes people's time and money.

However to answer your other question yes the Govt. should have some action in a national crisis. What exactly that action is I'm not sure yet and that action could be to get the F out the way. I don't know all the facts yet.

June 3 (Bloomberg) -- Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, whose state is bearing the brunt of the environmental damage from BP Plc’s Gulf of Mexico oil spill, challenged President Barack Obama’s decision to suspend deepwater drilling for six months.
The moratorium may cost the state as many as 20,000 jobs in the next 12 months to 18 months during “one of the most challenging economic periods in decades,” Jindal said in a letter to Obama released today. Two thirds of the rigs subject to a ban are in Louisiana’s coastal waters, the governor said.
Obama declared the moratorium to give a presidential commission time to investigate the April explosion and sinking of the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig, which killed 11 workers and unleashed as many as 19,000 barrels of oil a day. A longer interruption could crimp U.S. oil-and-natural gas production, raising energy prices and costing jobs, lawmakers have said.
“The last thing we need is to enact public policies that will certainly destroy thousands of existing jobs while preventing the creation of thousands more,” Jindal said in a statement.
The moratorium will shut 33 deepwater rigs in the Gulf of Mexico, including 22 near Louisiana, costing as many as 6,000 jobs in the next three weeks and 20,000 by the end of next year, Jindal said. At least 100 miles (161 kilometers) of coast has been fouled by oil and the fishing industry has “huge economic losses,” he said.

I agree, but when he doesn't trot out the dog and pony show people complain that he';s not doing anything. Unfortunately, that's pretty much all he can do at this point.
