Hmmm, if Steve Mariucci gets the job, will the Spartan halftime show be a Mariucci band? just wondering.
:hihi: Nice I don't see Pellini getting a major head coaching job. But I didn't expect Saban to leave either, so I may be niave. I'd hate to lose the guy - our offense hasn't been our strong suit and Miles has been less than a confidence-booster.
It will be interesting to see what happens with Pelini. He obviously came here in hopes of moving up to a HC job. He was not real happy down here for a while, although I think he's warmed up to us. I'd hate to lose Pelini, but Miles has done a great job so far of getting top notch coaches, so I'd expect us to bring another top DC in.
College football soup: The hot seat edition Michigan State made a smart move by dumping John L. Smith now. Why delay the inevitable? Now, everyone can focus on the future. And that's more important for MSU than Smith. Steve Mariucci isn't as hot a contender as you think. Instead, I'm hearing MSU is looking hard at Butch Davis. But don't expect Davis to take the job. In fact, don't be shocked if he doesn't take any job. It has been described to me that Davis is just "kicking the tires" of various jobs and won't jump back into the coaching fray this season. The guy still is making around $5 million a year. And, even if he did opt to coach in 2007, Davis isn't a good fit in East Lansing. Philadelphia Eagles quarterback coach Pat Shurmur? I don't think he'll get the job. His resume is to eerily similar to former MSU coach Bobby Williams: no head coaching experience, no coordinator experience. No way the Spartans can go down that path again. Not even with an MSU alum, which Shurmur is. In the end, I think the job will come down to Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator Todd Grantham and LSU defensive coordinator Bo Pelini. While Grantham may be the school's top choice, he may pass and wait for an NFL gig, which likely will come within the next year or so. That makes Pelini the best choice. The guy has an impressive resume that includes assistant coaching stints with the likes of Nebraska and LSU. Plus, Pelini has extensive NFL experience. Sealing the deal, in my mind, are Pelini's Midwest ties. He's an Ohio State grad with a tough, no nonsense approach that is just what the Michigan State program needs. Pelini looks like the next Bob Stoops, a Youngstown, Ohio, native like Pelini. Texas defensive coordinator Gene Chizik? Yeah, he'll get a sniff. But Pelini has a more impressive resume, and his Big Ten ties give him an edge over Chizik. Oh, and I wouldn't be shocked to see MSU alum and Miami Dolphins assistant head coach/receivers coach Charlie Baggett brought in for an interview. But, I don't think he'd have a legit chance for the gig. http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn/viewtopic.php?t=144572
From tirk's article: "LSU offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher and Texas' Chizik also are interesting options in Lexington, if something happens to Brooks." Wouldn't Chizik and possibly Fisher both turn down the Kentucky job? That is a coaching graveyard. Chizik will most assuredly land a better job in the next few years then KY.
