My point is that as far as an LSU legacy, Tittle and Jones had 3 years, Hodson had 4 years, and Russell had 2. And as far as an pro football legacy, Russell has nothing, I beg to differ. He led the AFL in rushing and won 2 league titles. At Oakland he converted to a tight end and became one of the best in the league, making All-League at TE and playing in another four league championship games. He played for ten years in pro football.
I'd have him #2 behind Jones (he's #4 behind Hodson and Tittle in my book) if not for the elephant chain.
here's my initial list: QB: RB: FB: WR: WR: TE: anyone but LaFleur OL: OL: OL: OL: OL: DE: DT: DT: DE: LB: LB: LB: CB: FS: SS: CB: K: P: KR: PR:
I have a problem with Mawae on the 1st o-line; don't remember him being anything special when he was here. His rep is more on what he's done in the NFL than at LSU. My offense, two-deep: WR Wendell Davis, Eric Martin T Lance Smith, Andrew Whitworth G Eric Andolsek, Remi Prudhomme C Nacho Albergamo, Ben Wilkerson G Alan Faneca, Stephen Peterman T Robert Dugas, Ralph Norwood TE Greg Lafleur, Brian Kinchen WR Josh Reed, Ken Kavanaugh QB JaMarcus Russell, Bert Jones RB Dalton Hilliard, Charles Alexander RB Kevin Faulk, Billy Cannon Have to think about the d for awhile longer.
Why? LaFleur was a great TE at LSU, probably a reason he was a 1st round draft pick. Don't really care what he did or didn't do in the NFL, he caught alot of passes for the Tigers.
Not true. Hodson was a 4 year ALL-SEC player. In 1989 he had 438 yards & 4 TDs in a loss to Tennessee. After Wendell Davis was in the NFL, Hodson broke LSU's single season passing yardage record 2,665 & TD record in 1989. (Both have been passed now) He had a great Senior season. Too bad LSU had no Defense in 1989.
Mawae was great at LSU. He just played on some really bad teams. That's the curse of an offensive lineman. No one notices when you're good unless the team around you is good too. He was an early 2nd round pick as a center, which is very unusual. He's legit.
I have to disagree. LaFleur had all of the physical gifts, in size and the appearance he had on the field, but I always felt that Nicky Savoie, who was also a TE during those seasons, was better than LaFleur--who looked all-world, but usually had little impact. His pro "career" was even less impressive--and I told the people I knew in Dallas that the Cowboys were making a big mistake (he was drafted the year I moved up here.)
JR is an extremely gifted QB. He had more tools than anyone who ever played at LSU. But I don't want him back. They never would have won a national championship with him. He was so undisciplined and stupid. He hurt LSU as much as he helped them. He had many comeback wins, but they were all comebacks because of him. If he hadn't made poor decisions and mistakes, they would have never trailed in ANY of those ballgames. And I don't care where he was drafted in the NFL, that doesn't count or matter. Have you ever heard of Ryan Leaf? I hate that Rohan didn't win the championship as the starter. He was one of the best field generals they ever had. He should be third string behind Hodson and Tittle.
