I can't believe a student can get a TOPS scholarship with an ACT score of 20 and maintain it with only a 2.0 GPA. This is supposed to be a TOPS scholarship, not a MEDIOCRE scholarship. Students should be required to have a minimum 28 ACT score and 2.5 - 3.0 GPA.
I admit I know nothing about the TOPS program but it sure sounds like a sign of the times to me. You know, if Johnny can't meet the bar well we certainly can't expect more out of Johnny, we have to lower the bar. This is the #1 reason why the country is circling the bowl. Because we've turned into a bunch of dripping, screaming, irritated vaginas.
tops gave us an advantage in baseball namely to help offset the stupid Title IX feminists movement. 11.5 schollys spread amongst 35 total. at leas this helped assuage that stupidity.
TOPS let LSU offer near full rides to great out of state players like Alex Bergman while still being able to use TOPS for Louisiana guys like Aaron Nola. Ryan Theriot said that if it hadn't been for TOPS he would have signed with Mississippi State
I have no doubt it helps attract athletes. But I don't believe tax payers should be asked to spend hundreds of millions of dollars for those athletes. If the people of Louisiana want to spend that much, then they will have to pony up. There is no free lunch. Unfortunately, people have now come to expect these scholarships as an entitlement. They are not.
The cost of college keeps going up (or the value of dollar is going down) so we gotta keep up with the joneses. Education is valuable in this world. Is providing free college education to mediocre students good for society? I'd argue education is very valuable, but society would be better off spending that money on primary education and social programs. Not everyone is meant for college, especially mediocre students who barely give a fuck or aren't mature enough to recognize the value of a marketable degree.
Its not about "ponying up"... Its about a system that is set up to cut from only two areas: education and health care. Meanwhile, each legislator gets to protect his/her district's pet projects. We need a new state constitution that allows cuts across the board.
