1. I am very surprised by how many people agree with this article. I thought it was a decent argument, but nothing open and shut about it.
Jeremy Schapp reported from Baton Rouge on Saturday and he stated the majority of people who are displaced are in favor of playing this game at Tiger Stadium. The same sentiments were expressed to Joe Horn about the Saints when he was in Houston talking to people. People living in shelters were bussed to the Houston game for a distraction. Jeremy also reported the people were very happy about OU losing to TCU :)
Regarding people asking for food during the tailgaiting, I think they would eat like royalty at every single tailgait on campus.
I still think there is time, and we have to trust that Skip and Co. will make the right decision.
I guess Dubois main point is the proximety and the fact that it is on LSU campus. I am sure that if the administration feels that one life can lost due to a game being played that it will be moved. If by Saturday there is no imminenet threat to life, then let it play.
His point about CNN panning to an ambulance across the street is misguided. Did they pan to dead bodies at the twin towers during the Yankee game? Were they seen as savages who only care about baseball? That game will be remembered forever in NY and for good reason. Tears were shed, the President threw out the first pitch, God Bless America was sang by an entire stadium, and the home team won. Families of Firefighters and the victims of 9/11 were honored. We should hold up NY as an example. The precedent has already been set. Of course we have to decipher the differences and make adjustments, but again I iterate. If by Saturday there is no imminent threat to loss of life by playing a game, then let it play.
  2. AMEN

  3. Well said sir, well said.
  4. Well, this is a forum for discussion and we pummel the crap out of dead horses all of the time. Some of us need to talk about things including arguing sometimes. Don't let it get your goat.
  5. My goat is dead! I just want to kick some Sun Devil arses for revenge!
  6. A bit of perspective on what is going on at the PMAC.

Evacuees are continuing to arrive. There are still thousands of stranded people in New Orleans, with many facing worsening medical conditions. The big exodus may be over, but those coming out now are in worse shape. Whether from exposure, absence of routine care and medicine, or recent injury, they are still arriving. If you haven't already, then quit reading the sports section, go volunteer, and see for yourself.

This is a far different scenario from 9/11 when a resumption of activity became a reaffirmation of life and all that is good in America. New York could go on because the affected geography was actually quite small. By game time we will be less than two weeks into this tragedy. Our state and local leaders are desperately trying to get more aid and secure a solid commitment from national leaders. Should LSU still be staging area, than what good that might be derived from playing a game is certainly less than the potential harm it could cause.

Remember, Louisiana already has a bad reputation. The fight to secure adequate reconstruction funds will be facing this hurdle from the start. The last thing we need right now is a chancellor appearing on Meet the Press defending a decision to hold a football game while the sick and dying are caught in traffic and given second-tier priority. Likewise, wouldn't you question a state requesting 40,000 troops when their own State Police are working game duty so soon after. And what of the 90,000 fans, isn't there something better they could be doing - and do they really need all this aid? We wouldn't look much better than those grabbing TV's along with the bottled water and diapers.

If it can work, then great. But in no way should LSU, or its fans, try to force this right now. All city and state resources are stretched and exhausted. Like your parents used to say, its time we act like big people.
  7. precisly why a game, that will bring revenue to the state and school, should be played.

  8. And like your screen name says, it's time we get back to work. The world has not ended, but, God knows, I look forward to the day that it has. That would mean I was enjoying the fruits of my life in Heaven. :thumb: Until that day we must keep our chins up, and not quit. I disagree completely with your comparison to the fans and the looters. That is way out in left field.

That being said, Welcome to the forum and stick around.
  9. NY played 7 days later.

LSU already said they would be responsible for hiring security as the State Police were already commited to the relief effort.

So four hours of someones personal time is too much to ask?

Already said that if ONE life is to be lost to a football game then do not play it.
  10. Thanks for the welcome. I'm a periodic lurker, but have always enjoyed the site.

Let me say, I have real mixed emotions about the game. After spending a lot of time at the PMAC over the weekend, though, it really impacted my thoughts. Some of these folks coming in are looking really bad. I'm no expert here, and don't claim any inside info, but it seemed to me that, with each day, more infrastructure was going into the PMAC, not less.

Volunteers are arriving from all over the country - doctors, emt's, responders. People have rented trucks to bring in donated supplies. A lot is at stake here.
