That's the other pass I was thinking of, that one did seem horrible, however much better than a pick........I noticed one of his passes that was tipped the defensive end had his back to Mett and just threw his hand up and tipped it, complete luck......happens I guess.
We came out strong the second half....running it right down their throats! But you can't run the ball EVERY play. This isn't pee wee football. LSU had a chance to break the game open on our second possession of the second half, but 3 runs later, a punt. I'm not one who calls for QB changes often, but, if the coaches don't trust Mett to throw, then he's no good under center. If you want to run it every play, put in a running QB. If you don't trust your QB to throw, find someone you do trust.
Continuing with my seldom posting pattern this season. I posted about the good, bad, and ugly after the UF game so I need to do the same after a win. Good: O-line looked so much better and opened up holes in the running game and gave Metts time to pass. Kudos to the big boys for the improvement and fire. Kudos to the coaching staff for coaching them up this week. I enjoyed seeing CLM coach up the Oline on the side. I like to see that involvement from him. The play calling improved although I would've liked to see some more passing in the second half. I think more screens and short stuff are needed. This will open up the long shot passes eventually. Defense did a good job in containing Shaw and getting pressure. Very well done. Although the secondary scared the crap out of me in the 2nd half. Bad: What is the deal with the batted balls? I've never seen so many batted balls. Is it USC skill or what? I think Metts has a little bit of a side arm delivery. Is this it? I can understand if he is 5' 9". I still didn't like a lot of the play calling. The 1st half I thought was good. Screens and quick slants but I thought the 2nd half was way too conservative. But I understand why. They didn't want to risk another INT and try to wear out the USC D. But we can't have that game plan for Bama. I think some more complex routes are going to be needed. All we seem to do is quick slants and short outs. Do that consistently and they will bait you on D. That's exactly what happened. Where was the tight end? With the LB's playing so close to the D-line could we do some play action, get the LB's to bite and dump it to the TE. It is almost like they have no faith in Metts at times. Ugly: USC's uniforms. I don't have much confidence in Alleman and Wing is making me really nervous too. We usually have such good kickers but I lack confidence on FG's now.
This is exactly what I thought. The underlying assumption is that the WR ran the correct route on a misfire, but that's not always the case. I've noticed more and more that our WRs route-running abilities leave much to be desired. I sometimes wonder if all of the off-season pitch & catch sessions with Mett & the WRs didn't hurt them more than it helped them. Route-running & timing don't mean shit if they can't be replicated against live action.
It was USC height and good coaching. Clowney is 6-7 and Taylor is 6-8. And clearly they were coached to jump up and try to block the pass if they read a screen or knew they couldn't get to the quarterback. Still, Mettenberger is tall, too, and he knew he was facing a tall line. He seems to learn everything the hard way.
It was a horrible pass. Mett has no touch at all. The WR was so wide open all he had to do was throw it up and let the WR run under it. Same with rhe fade route to the corner of the endzone. He neefs to get a better feel for when he needs to zip it in there and when he needs to put some air under it.
It was good play by good defensive players, but Mett doesn't help by staring down the WRs. Its definitely something he needs to work on.
I dont know, it looked pretty bad live and didnt look any better last night on the replay. You have a WR that wide open you put the ball where he can catch it. It wasnt even close.
In general, I agree. However, that's what good route-running is all about. Being open doesn't mean squat if you're two yards in the wrong direction, and makes the QB look like he needs glasses. Generally, the QB throws it long before the receiver becomes "wide open".
