They need a disciplinary coach to clean it up a bit... Too bad about 15 of the 32 teams took took the only ones available :hihi:
That's the most ridiculous thing I've read in quite some time. First, why on earth would Pete leave USC for a soon-to-be L.A.-based NFL team? While I don't expect USC to sink into the Pacific should Pete leave, I would expect the program to regress...and that would have USC fans pretty upset. Imagine Nick Saban leaving LSU for the Saints: I think I speak for many in saying we'd be pretty pissed at such a move. Second, if/when Pete moves up in class once again, why to the Saints, of all people? Getting a deal done to set this franchise up in Los Angeles is far from a done deal, so why make the jump based on what might happen? If he's ready to move after the season---and possibly winning 3 national titles of some sort in a row with Reggie Bush, Matt Leinart and even LenDale White going pro it'd be a good idea to do so if he really wants to return to the NFL---go someplace where they'd break the bank for a vibrant coach who has a defensive background yet allows his OC to be creative in building a killer offense to boot, give him top-flight facilities and all the support he could possibly want...and his fa-vo-rite QB as the #1 pick, to boot. Yep, Pete Carroll going to Houston makes a hell of a lot more sense to me than him going to the (ugh) Saints. :dis:
1.) If Nick made the Saints winners, I wouldn't have cared... 2.) The saints got more talent than people think... That is appealing to a coach.. it is not often a team with this much talent is forced to fire their coach
You don't speak for me on that issue. It wasn't much of a secret that Saban was going to go to the NFL at some point in the future. If he's gotta leave, I would have liked it to be to the Saints (at least last year when they were New Orleans' team). Besides, with a competent coach, who knows, the Saints might have actually been able to do something beyond mediocre.
Whole 'lotta "ifs" in the Patricia Carroll senario. One thing for sure is that he has to be based in California where he can be so close to so much other "wine." I know this won't happen but wouldn't it be nice if Va. Tech would pass up US(u)C(k) in the BCS and VT then blister Texas. When do we play Va. Tech again ?
After seeing Pete's long interview with Chris Meyers last week I'd be shocked if went back to the NFL. His main complaint, of many, about the NFL was that a coach has very limited control in roster decisions and even gets overuled on who to play at times. He gave an example but I can't remember what player it was. He also went on and on about the advantages of working with colege players instead of pro's, the fact the the NFL is a players league and college is a coach's league. Now, after listening to what Saban said all those years I have no doubt that Pete could just be doing the same thing, but seems like coaching for a meddling owner like Benson would be the last thing he wants to do. He also said he did not let the 49er's even meet with him last year although they expressed very strong interest. We can't say that about Saban. I think he stays but would risk any of my money on it.
Benson NEVER fooled me. I stopped attending Saints games almost 20 years ago (even when I was offered free tickets.) I have not avidly followed the Saints since 1999.
Pete Carroll is probably the hottest head-coaching commodity out there, regardless of his previous lack of success in the NFL. The man knows how to win and sustain winning, and being the competitor he is, he's surely thinking about the challenge that an NFL job would bring. I'm sure he also has the urge to win in the NFL so as to quiet any of the remaining naysayers, or perhaps just to prove something to himself. That said, I can't imagine a smart guy like Carroll would even entertain working for a franchise like the Saints. Anyone who does even the most cursory research on Tom Benson and the way he's run his team for twenty years must know that the Saints' owner is concerned less with winning championships than with making cash. The Benson philosophy is to spend as little money as possible to keep the team just mediocre enough so that the fans will have just enough hope to keep the Superdome full the following year. No matter which city the Saints end up calling their home, it is unlikely Pete Carrol will be their head coach if Tom Benson is still the owner. Carroll has simply got too many other, better options.
Okay, would you have cared if Nick made the Saints perennial winners...and his replacement delivered a solid decade of 7-4 or 8-3 seasons? I know I would. Also, the Saints have long, long been regarded as being a coaching graveyard. Name one ex-Saints head coach who has gone on to do anything----anything---after leaving the Saints. The closest you'll get is a Jim Mora who had his GM draft one Hall of Fame lock (Manning) and two possibles (E. James and M. Harrison), rode their talent to the playoffs...only to lose (gee, how predictable). If *that* is the only name you can come up with, then that just makes my point, doesn't it? Somehow I think a Nick Saban would look at that track record and this owner and pass.
