Yep, that's the word. A cargo ship from Africa docked in Belle Chasse. Some word out, it could be Malaria. Trying to get more info.

    More info:

NEW ORLEANS -- A critically ill person was taken from a ship in Belle Chasse and taken to West Jefferson hospital by an ambulance staffed with personnel in Hazmat suits Wednesday afternoon.

Jefferson Parish John Young said federal health officials informed him that the patient was being treated for malaria, and it is not contagious.

Young said when he asked why the patient was taken to West Jefferson Medical Center, he was told by federal and state health officials that the shipping company has a contract with a doctor who practices at West Jeff.

Three sailors on a Liberian-based Marine Phoenix cargo ship were hospitalized Wednesday evening. Federal and state health officials met the ship late Wednesday, after crew members fell ill. Health officials took precautions because the ship did make a stop in West Africa, where the Ebola outbreak is wreaking havoc, but Jefferson Parish officials confirmed that crew members on-board have malaria.

Young said the parish was notified about noon that the ship was coming up the Mississippi River, and that emergency managers monitored the situation through the afternoon and evening.

The ship, which was destined for New Orleans, was anchored in Belle Chasse. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, along with Coast Guard officials were called in for assistance. The ship stayed anchored in Belle Chasse for the night.

The patient taken off of the ship was said to be in critical condition, according to Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser.

Around 6 p.m., the critically-ill crew member could be seen arriving at the hospital, and the paramedics were wearing protective gear as they took him from the vehicle. Hospital officials said everyone took precautions until they knew exactly what the illness was.

The official says that a radio transmission from the ship reported symptoms that appear to be similar to malaria, an illness spread by mosquitoes. Around 1 p.m. the ship, the Marine Phoenix, which originated in Africa and docked for a short time in the Democratic Republic of Congo, docked in Belle Chasse after being escorted by river pilots. It was last known to have ported in Panama. The CDC confirmed that the New Orleans Emergency Operations Center was also alerted.

Dr. Fred Lopez of the LSU Health Sciences Center said officials were following protocol in taking extreme caution.

"I think it's standard procedure in this era of an outbreak in West Africa of Ebola," said Dr. Fred Lopez of the LSU Health Sciences Center. "Anyone coming out of that area of the world with these symptoms should be examined by health care professionals."

Employees with Port Ship Service of Belle Chasse confirmed they helped remove crew members from the Marine Phoenix but were asked by their employer not speak to the media. Those same employees were told by health officials that they weren't in any health danger.

The CDC and the DHH issued the following statement:

CDC, along with local and federal officials, responded today to a report of illness on a ship at the Port of New Orleans. Earlier today, local EMS transferred three of the ship's crew members to a local hospital. The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals (DHH) confirmed a positive test result this evening for malaria in the patient being treated at a New Orleans-area hospital. DHH shared this information with CDC and local officials. The other two patients had mild symptoms and are being assessed. Another ill crew member disembarked in the Bahamas two days ago, where he was diagnosed with malaria and later died. Malaria is spread by mosquitoes and does not spread from person to person. Approximately 1500-2000 cases are reported every year in the United States, almost all in recent travelers.

The ship's itinerary included Matadi, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), in addition to other ports. Based on a hospital's request, CDC conducted testing on the crew member who died, and the results showed that this crew member was negative for the type of Ebola that is causing the current outbreak in West Africa. Ebola is not suspected as a cause of the other crew members' illnesses. No crew members had known exposures to Ebola.

CDC will continue to work closely with the hospital and local health authorities.

Obama is easy to locate, he's mostly in the country he heads.

Jindal is almost certainly not in Louisiana at any given time.

Some word, the ship was at anchor, not allowed to Dock at a wharf. All ships are boarded by pilots to bring them upriver. Customs and Immigrations can board at anytime. Sometimes waiting at the dock was C&I. If something was found to be other than Pork, beef, Chicken, etc the Freezer was locked until they were departing US waters. At times we had armed guards at the gangway.
