he could easily start for the astros as a starting pitcher or outfielder but no, not for the tigers just yet. takes a bit more skill than for that single-a team.

Simply put: Lots of things would have to happen before Chad Jones starts. Will he get a great deal of playing time this season as a true freshman? You bet! ...but I'm not looking for him to be starting over Taylor on a consistant basis.

I think Jones will end up getting just as much playing time (possibly more) like Danny McCray logged last season--which was a good bit.

Jones will contribute, but don't look for him to start.

I'm excited to have CJ on our team...but quite frankly, I don't WANT him to start this year. I don't want him to HAVE to. We have experienced players at BOTH safeties, and as good as CJ may be, he doesn't have SEC game experience. That's what I hope he is able to get this year...some game experience. If he's our starter this year...that means somebody's hurt...and that's not good.

Was that rule changed recently because I thought Mike Fontenot only played two years at LSU and that was in 2001

Chris Jackson redshirted his freshamn year in baseball and played football as a true freshman, and I think I heard that he might come back to play baseball next year if the NFL doesn't pan out

Laron started as a true freshman and by his junior year he was a beast. We have pretty good corners, so letting CJ get some experience will only help us down the road.

Re: Could Chad Jones start this year?

Laron didn't start out the year as 1st team, and neither did Keiland...and in both cases, the players they ended up replacing were poorly suited to play their position. Travis Daniels was a corner trying to play safety, and Justin Vincent was 1/3 of the back he could have been without his injury (not to mention AB was in the doghouse and Hester is a converted fullback).

Even given the fact that Chad could play either safety position, he still has to overcome players who are worlds better than the previously mentioned players who got replaced. Curtis Taylor will show people what he's got and Steltz is All-SEC caliber already. Chad Jones will not beat either of those players out unless there is an injury. He has a great chance of starting on special teams and then next year, when he knows the defense, we'll see.

I didn't say I don't want him to PLAY...I said...well...you can see what I said above. I agree with everything you said in your post...I want him to play too. Just don't want him to HAVE to start.:thumb:

Chad's Dad says he is going to be a Tiger.

Still a slight chance but it is looking very solid now.
