during the time i was serving my time for the bet i lost, contained chaos and i had some good times with private messages bouncing around 9/11 conspiracy theories. he remains unconvinced that the pentagon was hit by a plane. i remain unconvinced that he is sane. during the course of trying to help him understand how urban legends work, i even found a snopes link on the 9/11 missile theory : http://www.snopes.com/rumors/pentagon.htm it pleased me that snopes had bothered to put up that page. it kinda puts the 9/11 stuff in the same league with other silly stories like "pop rox and coke belly explosion", where it belongs. i remember when i heard there were a large percentage of people who didnt accept that the US had really landed on the moon, i was incredulous. not anymore. now i am extra-credulous. you name it, people believe the government is tricking them.
when you tell contained chaos that, he brushes it off. it is fascinating. if you remind him there are lots of dead people and the familes of them would have to be either tricked or in on it, and the plane must have vanished somewhere, he just brushes that off as well. and the eyewitness, ignored. i dunno if it is an indicator of how much people distrust bush, that they beleive these 9/11 theories, or if is just a reflection of a human nature tendency to believe something fishy is always happening behind the scenes.
I believe this group is a subset of the group of folks who will be led to believe almost anything that is even remotely plausible i.e. people that think that their is a loophole in the income tax law and you don't actually have ot pay your taxes and the gubment can't do anything to you legally... BTW Welcome back martin. I respect a man that honors his bets.
