My Windows 10 laptop won't download any file. It appears to download and then it says "download failed. Virus scan failed. It's not macaffee or Windows defender. I even uninstalled Macaffee and that didn't fix it.

The geeks at Best Buy's Geek Squad couldn't figure it out and said they could wipe the hard drive and reinstall Windows for $200. I have done that myself in the past but now they don't give you a Windows CD when you buy a new computer.

So what I need to know is how would I reinstall Windows without a disk?

Alternatively I could get a version of Linux somewhere on a disk but if I do that I need to be able to run Windows software programs and use Chrome

Of course he did, I told you it would be him

Sorry @Bengal B it sounds like you need to bring it to a pc mechanic, geek squad doesn't know shit. Find that dude that has a garage next to his house with a mound of old computer towers stacked up outside. He will be able to fix it.

The problem started before that link was posted.

I could do the wipe and reinstall myself if I had a win 10 disc

You may still be able to find a bootleg copy but not sure. Bill is fairly protective of his $$$ and I'm not sure how much I would trust it. Probably best to go on and F disc and just whip it for a new copy of Windows. If it is a virus and you try to save anything that is currently on your computer chances are you will save the virus with it and do this all over again. Hope you don't lose too much valuable stuff.

I have some stuff I don't want to lose but I can save it on a USB drive. Since I bought the computer at Sam's Club and not off the street I should be legally entitled to a copy of W10.

I did this on a windows tablet. Download the windows 10 file to a usb drive. Install it from there.

If you have windows already it’s free using your windows login

Sounds good but the problem is that I can't download any file. I already tried to download a file to a usb drive and got the same failed message as when I try to download to the hard drive
