you can't recruit top skill positions coming out of high school running the the option. An Early Doucet or Xavier Carter would have never come to LSU if that was the case. the reason being is they want to go where they can get their best shot at being drafted by the NFL which doesn't happen much at Nebraska or Notre Dame anymore....specifically because of that reason. so not no but hell no.
LOL...first, he'd have to break the contract he just signed with Ohio University last week. Nice guy, I'm sure, but no.
I'm not say run a TOTAL OPTION, but like I said earlier this year the option could be used in our system to our advantage. But we would have a borges or chow OC that would work with the QB to improve our aerial attack also. You CAN balance an offense between the option and a pass style.
The point is this: you hire a guy like Solich to install and teach their system. His system is dead. Why would we need or want him to do anything else. The man is an option legend - you know his name because of the option - why would we make him a head coach in order for him to coach a little bit of the option (his specialty)?
Let me be clear, I do not want Frank Solich. I was just pointing out he was very successful with that offense just a couple of years ago. The option is not dying out because it is ineffective, it is dying out because it is not the flavor of the month. The option, if executed properly, is effective anywhere anytime with the right amount of passing mixed in. I don't want to see the option installed at LSU, but it is a viable offense if understood and executed - just as any other offense is when performed the same.
This is somewhat "dated" information from the beginning of December, but BYU was trying to put a package together for Chow that ESPN radio estimated to be at 1.2 annual mark, previously unheard of at BYU. At this point last season Chow was aleady the highest paid assistant in the game. His current package is estimated at $600K annual, not including other "incentive" incomes. I don't see Mr. Chow coming to the SEC .......but that's just me.
This was just a what if... post. Just testing the water to see. I just think that a balance of a run based coach with a OC that understands the forward pass plus the DC that we already have could seal the deal for our dominance of the SEC for the next 4 years. But seems to me alot of people here detest the option so....
For many players and fans, the option is boring as all hell. Also, it takes smart players who are willing to learn and be taught a very boring and methodical style of play (where do you find kids like this? Not in LA). It is tough these days to tell a gifted athlete that he should come block for your offense instead of being the focus of someone else's. The option is stale. As stated above, kids don't go to college to run the option. Effective or not, the option will never be the flavor of the month at any major college football program for a very long time...
