It's pretty simple actually and I'm surprised you actually need me to explain it. I should be able to make choices involving free will without government involvement so long as those choices aren't infringing on the rights of others. Seat belt and helmet laws fall into this category. I'm not saying I don't or won't wear them, but it should be my decision.

Glad you explained it. I took you to mean people should be able to do whatever they want because they are all smart enough to know what is right and wrong. It was the infringing on the rights of others I wasn't sure if you included.

I agree and think the gov't is going too far in doing so.......especially the seatbelt. I can remember when we'd sleep on the back dash of my parents' old Pontiac going back and forth from Ville Platte to Baton Rouge when my father was in Law School at LSU. I surely look back and laugh cause that's definitely not wise but how times have changed.

Ironically, my mother is the biggest, "Wear your seatbelt" spokesperson and I occasionally remind her of letting us do that just to pick on her.

I agree with you in the aspect that I don't believe in big government but at the same time I am glad there is a seat belt law, because when one decides not to wear a seat belt and consequently dies in an accident, it affects more than just that person. Family and friends suffer.

I understand where you're coming from here but people die every day, we can't legistlate against every contributing factor. Cigarettes is a far more leading cause of death- I'd guess, anyway, I haven't looked at any stats- and that's still legal.

Just for example here, should we pass legislation to stop eating unhealthy foods like cracklins?

If I have to wear a seatbelt in a car, they should have to wear a helmet.

I would guess it has something to do with insurance companies as to why these laws exist. Not sure why, just a thought.

That would make sense, I'd never thought of that.
