There was a guy on my high school track team, i don't remember his original event but one day the coach decided to make him a half miler. He had never run a half mile but that day in practice running it for the first time he ran something like 1:52 or 1:53. Faster than the fastest half miler in the state at that time. He never came close to that again and he never even won a race.
