Augustin is going to Texas. I think making up stats might be an epidemic around here. Is there an antidote....or some kind of vaccine?
Admittedly, I didn't go and look up the exact stats Bass had last year, but it was a good enough guess to prove my point. I'm going to go ahead and guess another stat that rarely did anyone but Bass have a +20 game. Bass carried the team through alot of the tough games last year. I hope someone else will pick up that role this year.
The basketball team WILL be deeper, but as always, there will be chemistry and "learning" that will need to take place. Add in a more difficult non-conference schedule (you ask and you did receive), and I see the Tigers struggling early on but finding their way in SEC play against weaker competition. Much like last year! :hihi: Seriously, Davis is going to be a force. While losing Bass is a blow, I see Glen upping his average to the 17 or so points that Bass averaged, and grabbing more rebounds than Bass. I think folks will be surprised by the all round game that Tasmin brings. We lost Hudson's outside shot, but we add Tasmin who will be a harder working defender and rebounder than Hud. Tasmin is HIGH energy and along with Big Baby, I think one thing that you'll see which you haven't in a while is a more vocal leadership on the floor than in past years. That and Tack's maturing on the court, will be keys to a great season and a good one. You know DMitch will be consistent and play hard. So the question marks are (like last year) point guard play, and who is going to step up on the perimeter. Right now, both of those question marks are big. Throw out the typical "pre-season" hype of the school and media. Assume Ben Voogd is good, but not the savior kind of recruit. Assume that GTemple can play some point, but also will need time. Assume that when Tack gets back he'll be rusty. Assume that the "bigs" that are new will be young and raw. Teams will play zone on the Tigers and try to slow things down, and who's going to be ready to hit the open shot on the outside? DM and then... Temple or Voogd will need to step up. So, overall, I think you're going to see a younger, more long and athletic team, but one that will need support and encouragement early. You'll probably see a good number of losses before SEC play (I mean they're playing Connecticut, Ohio State, etc.), and then hopefully by the time the SEC rolls in, they'll be more cohesive, find their pattern, and then run again to a 12-4, 11-5 type SEC record, which puts them in the tourney, and if Tack has matured more this season, I can see them making a decently little run at the end. If this team does stick together (and remember the new NBA age rule does work in our favor), we'll be even better next year. Hopefully DJ Augustin and Perry S. see that, this is a program that's on the rise.
Losing a player like Bass would be hard on any team. The key is to not have one player try and take up all of the slack. If Davis increases his output by about 5 or 6 a game, Mitchell by a few, etc. then they will do ok. Bass' quiet leadership will be hard to replace as well but Davis was the acknowledged vocal leader of that team by the time the SEC season was in full swing I believe. And one thing this team will have going for it is that Minor will be much more consisitent than Hudson in scoring and a taller presence down low, we were at a disadvantage with him at forward, especially when Regis left. And I've never seen a guy so inconsistent from game to game in shooting than Antonio. Minor will shoot a lot higher percentage on drives to the basket and 8-12 footers I believe. The need for one or two of the other freshman to step up and play good defense and get critical rebounds will be the key to the season in my opinion. The comments made about Thomas in that regard make me hopeful.
